just buy it new ... it is not like any 3rd party retailer is sticking to the official Apple price of a previous model anymore

New and unlocked iPhone 13 from a 3rd party seller (not mobile provider) in the US? Where? Exactly, nowhere.

Anyone who uses Apple’s trade-in program likely just doesn’t want the hassle of using OfferUp, Craigslist or some other third party way. You can easily sell for 2x what Apple will offer, usually more than double.

Usually more than double? If that's the case then Apple must not be charging enough for some of their refurbished phones. For example, Apple offers $300 trade in for an iPhone 12. Double that would be $600 yet Apple only charges as little as $529 for a refurbished iPhone 12 and that refurbished phone includes a new outer shell, new battery, other new parts (if necessary) and a same-as-new warranty. Plus free shipping, 14 day return policy, etc.

Missed it by a few weeks, was debating between a 14 and the 13 Pro (given the 14 Pro shipping delay has improved only just recently), but I couldn't find a 13 Pro with the right storage in the various leftover inventories of local operators (I don't need 1 TB on a phone lol) - so I got a 14 and am very happy with it, but refurbs direct from Apple are definitely a good option, I would have gone for this.

I paid a 13 mini of 512 Gb, NEW, 909€ to 30 March 2022. Apple today sells a refurbished, USED, identical, for 1099€. And evaluate the same product for trade-in 350€.
Apple deserves all the fines that the courts and institutions can impose on them.
EDIT: The screen has scratched in 3 days, the battery is at 89% in 9 months. Apple does not sell technological products, it sells technological waste at a high price.

This article is about Europe tho

It's about (parts of) Europe but also the U.S. as the headline mentions the U.S. and one of the paragraphs in the article states, "Availability of refurbished iPhone 13 models should expand to the U.S. soon, as the models are now listed on Apple's refurbished store there, but remain grayed out for now. This is typically a sign that availability will begin within a matter of days."

I'm getting a free iPhone 11 Pro Max from my partner, who's upgrading to a 14 Pro. I have an iPhone Se2, which I'll trade in for store credit for a new case for the new phone. I'm stoked! it's in great shape, and battery life is at 87%. The camera's will be better than my current phone, and honestly, the price (free) is totally worth it. and I can wait for a few more years before I actually buy a new phone.

Apple really are desperate for sales !

Mind you I’m still rocking a 13 mini out of warranty, if I can replace it for £649 from apple should something go wrong, then I can’t complain.

Right now only iphone 11 pros are available in the Apple Refurbished store. No 12s or 13s. But they sell for $729 for the 256 gig 11 pro max & $899 for the 512g 11 pro max. Which is about $500 cheaper than the iphone 14 pro max equivalents. You can get them even cheaper on ebay & amazon… but they wouldn’t come with Apple’s warranty. Personally I like the curved edges of the 11 Pros over the newer flat edged design.

Um yes they do!

Also many 3rd party retail outlets, from what I've seen in Canada, keep the official retail price unless the go-head from Apple to drop is granted and normally isn't unless sold with a carrier plan. I may just get one before a solid 2023/2024 iPhone Pro with USB-C launches (I'm unsure).

Welcome to Europe😊

I would personally never buy a iPhone with 15% discount.
Even if the battery is new and it’s looks new, it’s still used by a person in 1 year.
Even if Apple have gone through the phone to see if it functioning ok, you can never tell what the person did with the phone.
I would personally buy a complete new phone for that price.
But that’s just me😊

like what, exactly? can you clarify this paranoia with some examples at least?

I missed your comment untill now. Sorry🙂

Example: Drop a phone to the floor/road.

Paranoia? Maybe it is 100% paranoia.
But my personal comment/opinion was the price vs the low 15% when you get a 1 year old used phone🙂

...and how exactly do you think this would break the phone where extensive testing would not detect? Refurbs go through more testing than factory phones (which could also be dropped).

Maybe you know more than me about the extensive testing?
But it is still a used phone for 1 year.
I said that i personally wouldn't buy a used phone for that low discount.
I hope you can respect that, as I respect your opinion🙂

The greyed out entries for refurbished iPhone 13 models have disappeared from the US website. Guess they won't start selling these anytime soon.
