Insufficient ports and RAM. Pass. Better Silicon Macs are coming. Don't waste your money on the first generation models.
I'm curious, do you expect them to put 4 USB-C port Mac Minis in 2021? They are bringing back HDMI because they can't add USB-C ports so until M2/3 is out (which probably won't be until all Mac devices are loaded with this chip) in 2022 mid year earliest, I think mini will be here to stay as is. They are not Beta, just not capable yet. Every generation of Macs had their shortcomings, whether heat issues, keyboard problems, screen coatings, whatevergates, upgradiblity issues.. eventually they are fixed and new problems come up. It doesn't necessarily mean they were betas..

I think lots of people picked these up over the holidays to get a first hand experience with Apple Silicon and then returned them under Apple's extended return policy to save up for the next release.

Folks sitting around bored taking advantage of return policies, and yes, YouTube "reviewers". There was one member here on the forums that nearly purchased -every- flavor of the M1 MacBooks to try them out. Did they really have to get a 512 storage M1 vs a 256 to figure that out?

I still recall Apple charging their 15% store restocking fees not too long ago. Honestly, I wouldn't be too surprised if some of the larger retailers implemented such policies again. That'd suck, but I'd rather see that than Apple increasing margins on new products to offset the refurbs.

Unfortunately Apple doesn't seem to have a return-abuse policy like BB and Amazon do, but I imagine if it was that much of a problem they'd have restocking fees.

If you want a new mini I’d get one of these otherwise it’s likely you’d have at least a years wait probably more looking at previous releases. You can then resell the M1. Now, on the laptop side I’d see what happens later this year with the 14” hopefully with an m.2!

256GB is plenty for me. Even with Logic and all of its additional content. I find more storage just leads to more clutter and crap I never actually use. Sure, I guess it's not great if you need to store lots of high res video or tons and tons of RAW photos, but comparing it to a 16GB phone is silly.

you can also buy a 1TB usb storage drive for $60 To plug into the mini.

Um, what is there to be jealous about? Marques Brownlee who I regularly watch and admire and others such as Dieter Bohn from the Verge and Linus Tech Tips are all YouTubers I subscribe to. The reality is, its a saturated market and we necessarily don't need 70 unboxing and reviews of the same device.

And their childish title screens, usually featuring an exaggerated facial expression, pointy finger and screaming font.

Having only 256GB on Mac is like a 16 or 32GB iPhone. They really need to start Macs with at least 512GB or 1TB
But options like iCloud Drive make 256gb more than tolerable given what Apple charges for SSDs, especially for non-mobile devices like a mini, no?

I agree. I use Cloud storage and let MacOS figure it out. The reason people usually give me when asking them what they use all that disk space for is 98% of the time related to laziness.

Could be a number of reasons...

1) YouTube reviewers.
2) The case had a scratch or defect.
3) There was something else wrong (defective RAM, or SSD, or other internal component).
4) They realized they couldn't use multiple displays (well you CAN use two with the mini but only over very specific connections).
5) They didn't realize bootcamp doesn't work on the M1 (yes there are sort of work arounds but it might be too much hassle for the buyer).
6) They migrated from Windows to Mac due to the M1 hype and found the experience too jarring, or they couldn't run a program they needed.
7) They are allergic to small silver boxes.
8) Aliens with big elbows brainwashed them into using a Chromebook... the possibilities are endless...

I am of the opinion alot of these refurbished units will be reviewer returns. Whilst many will be looking towards Youtube reviewers as the culprits, I believe many will be from tech review websites.

Not seeing any refurb Mac mini in UK refurb store yet, but usually lags a few days behind US store. Having bought from refurb before I continue to monitor what's available - these usually appear some months after release. The UK refurb store is currently listing machines that are up to 4 years old - guess there is a niche market for rose gold MacBooks which cost just £40 less than a refurb MBP m1...

So I bought the 16/256 Mini and am about to return it after 7 days.

Really fast but there are a few issues like the HDMI port coming on a little late and a few Bluetooth issues which seem to be fixed now after the 11.2 update but I'm not totally convinced I have bought a USB C to DP adaptor which works fine;

I think I am going to hang-on with my MacbookPro from 2015 (16/256) and see what WWDC comes up with - but to be honest having used it there is a good chance I might go buy it again from the Apple UK Refurb store and save a bit of money if the laptop gets any slower.

1st gen tech working really rather well.

Unboxing no, reviews you can never have enough

Will buy the cheapest M1 Mini when the price drops a bit more to replace my HTPC passive-cooled hackintoshed NUC (which is already a bit slow and I am scared to upgrade it to Big Sur).
The 8/256 m1 mini is ideal for this - the fan will never kick in during movies, 8GB RAM is plenty for home-theater, external USB-C SSD costs nothing to expand to 1-2TB and I have USB to SPDIF converter to connect the speakers already working with the Hack :)

New: $1299
Refurb: $1099

You are right, I tried a different browser and got the price you saw.

I didn't realize the browser I used was logged in with ID.me service; the Apple Store was stacking a military veteran's discount on top of the refurb price - I was seeing the price as $989 for a 16GB/1TB M1 mac mini, and $1068 out the door with sales tax (8%).
