Mine has been shipped and is due on the 24:) But I won't get it until July 1 because I will be in Hawaii on vacation. I don't seem to be getting much sympathy. I know, I know i'm a jerk.

I have no interest whatsoever in going to Hawaii. But have fun. The iPhone will be here when you get back.

Knowing our luck the itunes servers will crap out on the 24th and we'll all be waiting to activate

Doubt it. The day 2.0 came out (3G; I still had a contract on my 1st generation) I called in at work and waited 8 hours before I could download the 2.0 software. The day 3GS and 3.0 came out, I got the new phone but also updated my 1st gen iPhone but waited till about 8 at night to activate and I was just fine. Hopefully it's the same this year. =\

You better have a neightbor sign for it, or call 800# and tell them youll be out of town and do a HOLD FOR PICKUP! Fedex will do 3 (24th, 25th, 28th) attempts after that will be hold for 2 days for pick up. then if still not picked up itll be sent back to apple in Cal on Friday or Monday!
My office manager will sign for it and keep it safe if she wants to keep her job. I am one of the few old guys in this forum

Hawaii's awesome, you really won't care that you don't have the latest and greatest smartphone while you're there. I'm guessing that your office manager will e-mail you when it arrives. You'll smile then return to your mai tai/beer/whatever.

You got your priorities straight!

:)

Absolutely. The iPhone 4 pre-order was an unmitigated debacle.

Both Apple and AT&T should be ashamed at how poorly this went (and I'm a shareholder of both companies). These are Fortune 500 companies running big-iron RDBMS systems like Oracle, SAP, whatever. They should be able to handle thousands of transactions a second.

Ashamed? Little over the top don't you think?

What other phone manufacturing company is able to take a sudden surge of 600,000 orders in a single day on top of their existing order load? Apple and ATT did not expect and had no historical data to indicate that they should expect that kind of traffic load.

Before you guys start jumping and screaming, "zOMG 23rd," if you check the actual tracking page, it says that it'll be delivered on the 24th (at least for me it does). This is the case, despite the fact that my e-mail from Apple stated the 23rd.

for what its worth my apple email says delivery by the 24 but the tracking page from FedEx says "estimated delivery June 23rd by 10:30am"

I doubt I will see it on the 23rd but who knows.

Nationwide network issues? Really? Ones that affected Apple and AT&T, but not other sites like Yahoo, Google, Amazon, et cetera ad nauseam?

Or are you saying that these guys don't know how to set up private peering at MAE West, MAE East, whatever?

Where did I say Nationwide network issues? They have their own network that communicate with other networks. If their internal network has problems, it will cause problems for everyone trying to communicate with them, which doesn't cause problems for others.

Check it tomorrow night and everything will be updated with the correct info. Hong Kong is a day ahead of us so for now these are probably ETA's.

I still don't believe it was an internal network issue unless it was some completely bungled database connection issue.

That seems far more likely. After all, the iTunes Store worked quite fine through the pre-order period.

I know its 5,071 miles./QUOTE]

Chances are they are on an MD-11 which cruises at 544mph.

5,071/544 = 9.32.

So nine and a quarter hours plus 45 for ascent and descent is looking like a 10 hour flight to AK. I hope they serve my phone peanuts and cocktails cause that's a long flight!

For real. That's one of the only places where I couldn't care less about technology. LOVE IT. Kaua'i is my favorite.

Apple and AT&T had plenty of historical data (the past three iPhone launches).

The fact of the matter is that big-iron RDBMS systems like Oracle, SAP, whatever can handle this volume of transactions. Heck, LiveNation/Ticketmaster can sell out 60,000 arena concerts in minutes.

This should have been kiddie play for Apple, AT&T, and others. AT&T knows crunch time. You should see their call volume on major holidays (like Christmas, Mother's Day, etc.).

Trust me, I realize that this debacle won't affect Apple's financials. It's still embarrassing.

Apple already conceded that they should have done a better job.

It's the bloody at&t eligibility system that sucks.

It's all about the developer's skills ...

Most likely network issues.

As a software engineer, I can say from experience that all these "big iron" database systems mean nothing if the developers using them can't build a truly scalable web application. I'm pretty sure that Apple has such talent. But last Tuesday's debacle, in my mind, proves that the same can't be said for AT&T.

Hope hes not sitting next to Wilson! ;)

Your correct! its an MD-11. We have a Airbus going thru the last FAA testing stages before it can be "released" into the fleet that will go from Hong Kong to Memphis with out stopping like they have to in Anchorage.

Im looking at a flight that left Anchorage Sun 12:55PM AKDT and will land in Hong Kong Mon 03:13PM UTC

For real. That's one of the only places where I couldn't give two sh**s about technology. LOVE IT. Kaua'i is my favorite.
North Shore Kaua'i is the best.

The fact that there are no traffic stoplights north of Kapa'a pretty much indicates the island mentality.

I don't give a s*** about technology when I'm on Hawaii. It's about surfing, beer, and babes in bikinis.

Seriously, stop plugging kauai, Or I'm going to have to put up with tons of dumb haoles. Just do what I do. "Oahu, is perfect for anyone who wants to see hawaii."

We did one of the boat trips to snorkel on the North Shore. Most beautiful place on Earth that I've seen. My in-laws have a timeshare in Princeville and one on the big island's west shore.

Amen brother!

Ding, ding, ding!

My guess is that this was indeed the case as Apple continued to take pre-orders while AT&T melted down.

I'm thinking that AT&T actually booked less than 15% of total iPhone pre-orders this day (the majority going to Apple.com, followed by the local carrier sites).

Of course, I live in hanamaulu. I think I've got a fair chance of getting mine first, but who knows and this iphone thread already makes me feel too white.
