Maybe the setup is different, but here in Wash DC they provide ethernet from the ONT that you can run into your own router. I've been doing that with Airport Extreme for several years. Just upgraded to gig service and same thing. (which reminds me - I need to return the router they sent that I don't need).

I didn’t know this! I will have to check rates again and compare. I need internet and tv. While I would save in the first year, I’m more interested about comparing normal rates since a year goes by really quickly.

wake me up. Apple is becoming notorious for paper launches.

Not everything is about profit (e.g., loss leaders). This is something Apple understood under SJ--the ecosystem is (was) very important to customer retention.

Enjoy the current state of profits at Apple because, at least in my circles, there is growing dissatisfaction with Apple's entire lineup (from iPhones to computers). If Apple is not careful, they will find out just how fickle is their new customer base, which has changed considerably in the last 5 years.
I don't care about profits - I was simply explaining Apple's decision to kill their router division. But I would argue that a router is not necessary to the ecosystem, and that's also a reason to kill it off. Setup was a breeze, but other than that, it fulfilled the same service as any other router would. And let's not pretend Steve didn't kill off ecosystem products too - like the iPhone dock. Sometimes it is about the bottom line.

I'm so tired of people saying Steve would've done it differently. News flash - it isn't the year 2000 anymore. Things have changed dramatically since then, and not a single person here knows how Steve would handle it.

So I'll say it again - the armchair CEOs here are just ridiculous.

You could just do what I did. This works really well, and the drive stays out of the way and I never see it.

I also have a second drive that I leave in a drawer at work, and bring home every month or so to do a second off-site backup.

Ingenious but MESSY (for me). RIP MINIMALISM... (which was one of the tenants of Apple... rip that too)

I happened to come into possession of one of the airport routers a few years back. Quite accidentally.

So I decided to set it up. And yes, setup was a breeze.

Until... I decided I’d make it as secure and locked-down as all the other routers on my network. That’s when it’s shortcomings became obvious.

It is a great home router. If you don’t have any particular reason to enhance your security measures.

If I hadn’t been dealing with someone in particular at the time that warranted extreme measures for privacy, I probably would have considered the airport to be sufficient.

But some of us have certain people who cause us trouble. And honestly, when it comes to Wi-Fi, we all should pretend to have those kind of stalkers anyway when it comes to setting up our security.

Debating whether to buy a new TC (to upgrade an older one). Do y'all think they are going to kill Back to my Mac and the ability to access a TC remotely?

Laptops: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (14") and Dell XPS 13" are two of the top rated portables. I am looking at both in case my 2013 MBA goes belly up before Apple redesigns their laptop keyboards.

Razer Blades look cool too. Also Surfacebook Pros are somewhat MBP like.

One of the worst decisions made by Apple recently.
I have been using AirPort Extreme since 2009, just purchased a/c few months ago.
I never had to re start these routers.
I am still suing 2009 model for extending my network.
They work great.

Apple gets rid of or doesn't update its best products these days.

Steve Jobs - You're truly missed. Other than Airpods, there is not a single innovative Apple product available these days.
forget about releasing new products they are killing good products & features.
MagSafe charger with LED indicator was the other bad decision.
Killing Airport series.
Killing monitors, LG monitors suck.
I do agree, AirPods are great.
HomePod sounds good, but with out Apple Music subscription it is almost useless.

Yep. With Apple also deprecating lots of functionality in OSX server its got to the point where I may as well buy an Intel NUC, run linux on it to act as my home server.

That will mean I will dump my ATVs for Kodi boxes
That will mean I dump my airports for Linux based routers
That will mean I replace my MBP with a linux based laptop
....

You can see where this is going

I have used Apple gear since the Mac 512KE, and in all honesty I am not sure I will be buying anything more, they are pushing me to alternatives.

Back in the days of the 6100 etc those machines were crap, its just the alternatives were worse. Now the alternatives are more viable than Apple because Apple is shooting its self in the foot for a quick buck.

Tim doesn't get this ecosystem, thing I guess.
Kill all the products that don't make enough money.

Wow. Apple is really going down hill.
Years ago, the ease of setup of the Base Station was magical, and brought me to the Apple system. (remember, other routers were hard to setup back then)

Sure miss Steve.
I am charging my iPhone wirelessly using a Samsung charger, because Apple still can't do it after a year. Having to use. a Samsung charger to charge my iPhone is very Symbolic of the problems at Apple. Really Sad to see Tim slowly kill off Apple's advantage. Sure miss Steve.

Mine also is an early 2008 Mac Pro which had a nVidia 8800GT that died - orange screen. Used iPad to look on Amazon for a replacement which was a reasonable cost (new video card). It's been 19 months since it was replaced. Wondering what the new Mac Pro might be and WHEN it will be available. Soon some software will not work with current Mac Pro. Mac OS 10.11.6 is latest that this model can use.
Just discovered 8-year-old NexStar dock no longer functions.

Turbo Tax is not supported next year (for 2018 Taxes) - while not the end of the world - if nothing on the horizon - I may settle for an iMac... :)

Still a stupid move with so many Apple products which need WiFi.

Yep. And with articles like this - https://www.wired.com/story/vpnfilter-router-malware-outbreak/ - I really, really don't understand why people (Apple users) aren't more upset and more freaking out that we will all someday have no choice but to use WiFi hardware from vendors who simply do NOT take the same approach to security and privacy as Apple.

Without Apple networking hardware - we will all have no choice but to purchase other-brand hardware - all of which will have built-in back doors and/or terrifyingly exploitable flaws.

I'll be using my three 6th gen AEBS and one 5th gen AEBS roaming (mesh?) setup until something literally forces me to replace them.

From a perspective, we don’t want other companies taking the same stance Apple has taken with regards to our privacy and security with Internet connectivity and routers.

If they all had Apple’s attitude, you wouldn’t have been able to post your comment.

But yes, I suppose other companies could stop releasing updates to their devices. And they could stop addressing vulnerabilities that are discovered. And once they get far enough behind, they could just stop selling it.

Wait... that is actually a great security idea. If all network connectivity devices are discontinued and existing ones eventually die, then there is hope for our security after all. No internet, no data breach.

I don't have a device, but is the audio quality put out via the AEx toslink/3.5mm jack better than via wireless airplay? It's already streaming over your network either way . . . (honest question to which I don't know the answer).

The airplay audio is streamed and any airplay device would have to have some sort of DAC to decode it into analogue audio, as speakers are analog.
The quality comes down to the DAC. AEx DAC is decent. Apple has solid DAC components. Idk about audiophile high demand though.

I’m surprised mosmhavent mentioned this...

I run an AirPort Extreme for one reason...security. Apple’s been the only consumer router company to take security seriously at all (until very recently).

Do we have any idea how long they’ll provide updates for? The last was in December, I think, and that seemed WAY overdue.

They’ll relate the hardware for 5 years or something, but that’s meaningless...we need to know how long they’re provide security updates for.

I’m thinking I’m jumping to Google Wifi. It’s a downgrade in terms of antenna, but probably fine, and it’s getting security updates multiple times per year.

The only other thing that might be a possibility is Symantec’s new router, but it requires a yearly fee I’d rather not pay, and I kind of trust Google’s security more than Symamtec’s anyway.

I’m not sure if I need to replace this right away, or could keep coasting for months or even years...

There are multiple vendors I trust for security. Synology, ubiquiti, AMPLIFI, etc.

You mention security and then want to go to Google Wifi? Rethink that, please! I would not give a SaaS advertising company root level access to my network.

Target currently has the AirPort Express discounted for $89.00 that’s $10.00 off the retail price, my local Target had them in stock. It’s in store only not online. So I picked one up since I also had a gift card. Set up was super easy. I didn’t realize these work so great to extend your WiFi signal using my time capsule.

Yeah they are great devices. Also nice for traveling and creating your own secure wifi network in a hotel room. Yet another great product of a by-gone Apple era that is canned.
