On the matter of Apple board independence, I am suprised no one mentioned that it was the board that chose to oust Jobs over Sculley back in 1985. No suprise Steve Jobs hand-picked the board when Jobs took over Apple after the Apple-NeXT acquisition back in 1997.
 
Of course it was the Board that fired him. Who else do you think fires (or has the ability to fire) a CEO of an American public corporation? No real significance of anything there, I'm afraid.
