So your hogging a computer to download the ENTIRE ipsw and do a restore? Has anyone noticed?

hehe - nah, I'm not that nefarious. I know the guys pretty well (it's not a branded Apple store - it's www.magnummac.co.nz) and our wives/girlfriends know each other, blah blah.

The good news is that it worked. Must have been the update itself that got corrupted, thus not even allowing a restore. Am still keen to figure out what went wrong, but using a totally different internet connection and computer to install the update seemed to do the trick. Just now in the middle of putting everything back on to the iPhone itself (e.g., music, podcasts, etc.)

I've given up, going to a Apple Store on Monday. I dumbfounded the product specialist at the Apple help line. Thanks for everyone who tried to help.

There is a silver lining: I might get a new phone out of this situation, one free of smudges. :)

I hope it works out for you. I think the reason it worked for me is that, when I went to create a new account on my MBP in order to (hopefully) restore it that way, I did NOT make it an administrator account. When I took it to my local shop, I'll bet the machines there were in fact running with admin accounts and that's why it worked. Just a theory - I could be wrong.

Do as I did. Delete iTunes and then reinstall the new version and try to get the iPhone into dfu mode and try restoring. Do this as ur last resort, it's better than waiting out the whole weekend without ur iPhone.

change networks

hey all - I had same problem went to a diferent wifi network and used different USB and the Restore worked.

*update*

In desperation, I drove to my sister's house (which is very far away). I used her computer, did a fresh install of iTunes, synced the phone, AND IT WORKED!!!

I tried this with my other computer and it didn't do anything. The only difference I can tell is that she has a 32bit version of XP, and both of my Computers have the 64bit version. That, and I used her old iPod usb cord, but they look identical so I don't think that was it.

I am doing my "happy i got my iPhone back" dance.

I've encountered the same problem and have tried all the recommendations and still no luck. But my question is, should this error code interfere with my wifi connection that it disconnects it? That is what that keeps happening to me. Error 3014 would appear and my internet connection will be disconnected. Any help and input is much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Similar problem here, kept getting error message 3016 every time I tried to restore. Went ahead and moved to another computer in the house (same network) and upgraded from there. Went flawlessly. Now back on primary pc doing the restore from backup to get my apps back. Fingers crossed!

Update: Jailbreak went flawlessly, now getting my apps synced back. Next step, see if APTBackup restores all my Cydia apps. Then off to the gym...too much sitting around with this damn update!

Update.

Finally everything worked. I guess it was just Apple's server being bombarded with everyone trying to get the update.

Had the same problem as a lot of you guys. Tried DFU restore, restart, reinstall, othing worked.

Apparently all I i had to do was open ports 80 and 443. Everything works fine now.

What the heck was that? I plugged my brand new 3GS into my laptop for the first time, figured I should probably update to the newest firmware before doing anything else. And the update fails? Note to self, avoid all future firmware updates from Apple without reading this forum extensively to get the real scoop...

The DFM mode or whatever did not work for me. I think my problem was that I dock my laptop and use an external monitor and a USB 2.0 hub with it... I removed the hub and connected the iPhone directly to my laptop and it asked to start restoring immediately.

Who knows, but I would have expected more from Apple either way...

Cure For Brick

I tried this. It works. I later read that it may be the only cure for the 3.0.1 update.
1. Restore the iPhone in iTunes on a different computer.
2. Restore the iPhone a 2nd time from the backup in iTunes on your own computer. This will bring back all your music, photos, etc.
I have 3 iPhones - 2G, 3G, 3Gs. The 3.0.1 update bricked them all. Steps 1 & 2 unbricked them all.
When I first tried to restore on my own computer I got the message - Error 13 (how informative!). The icon of the white USB cable pointing toward the disc was all I could get on the iPhone screen. I searched the internet for answers. There is no answer. The iPhone 3.0.1 update is screwed up, not your computer.
