Apple Brings AI Tab Organization and AI-Generated Extensions to Safari

Apple today unveiled a raft of Safari upgrades powered by Apple Intelligence, including automatic tab organization, AI-generated custom extensions, and new privacy-first browsing tools.

The centerpiece feature is automatic tab organization, which uses Apple Intelligence to group a user's open tabs into relevant topics without any manual intervention. If someone is planning a weekend trip, for example, Safari can pull all of their travel-related tabs into a single topic. As browsing continues, Safari will slot new tabs into existing topics or create fresh ones as needed.

Apple is also introducing a way for users to create custom Safari extensions using natural language. The company described the feature as "describe an extension," letting users specify what they want in plain English and having Safari generate an extension that adapts web pages accordingly. Apple's example was adding a toolbar button that saves and rates recipes from cooking sites.

A new "Notify Me" feature lets users ask Safari to watch a specific web page for changes and alert them when something relevant happens, such as a product restocking or a price drop. Users tell Safari in natural language what they are looking for, and Safari sends a notification when it detects a matching change on that page.

Apple is bringing a background agentic password-updating tool to the browser. Working alongside the Passwords app, Apple Intelligence can automatically navigate to eligible websites, sign in, and update weak or compromised passwords to strong ones with a single tap.

Apple says all of these capabilities are built with privacy in mind, and that no personal browsing data is exposed to Apple or anyone else in the process.

Hey look, more useless AI stuff! I got so many minuses when I said that Apple Intelligence is useless (the old one). And I am bold to say this new AI slop functions are also mostly one time uses - after that useless. Nice waste of a year, Apple

I usually have a lot of tabs open at work, using several web interfaces for all kinds of technical things. They are all related in a way, but I fear that the generic AI model will group the wrong tabs together. I'd rather organise this myself.

In the current version of Mail, I did turn of the categories too, because it often tagged my incoming emails to the wrong category even though I corrected them several times.

This sounds a lot like the App Library… and it’s nothing that I want or need. Siri’s “relevant topics” probably won’t match the way I internalize information. Just like the App Library. I hope this can be turned off.

Man I was really hoping we'd get vertical tabs on the new Safari
I've started using them ever since I tried Arc and I cannot go back to tabs on top, the amount of tabs you can see at a glance is so worth the slight loss of horizontal space

Hey Siri, create an extension for macrumors.com to remove all the ads as well as all the sponsors articles, keep only the actual news articles about Apple products and softwares.

Apple introduces a fancy AI system to automatically reorganise tabs but still after years of asking won't give us a decent vertical tabs implementation as seen in many competing browsers? I moved from Windows to MacOS just over a month ago now and I really liked Edge's vertical tab implementation. Is it too much to ask for Apple to at least keep up with that?

Yes, if you are willing to lose a significant amount of horizontal space by keeping the sidebar permanently on screen that is effectively vertical tabs but it uses a lot of space and you still can't get rid of the horizontal tabs to reduce clutter there.

If Apple would just give us an extra "compact" option for the side bar where it only shows the icons and on mouse-over expands to full view (for as long as the mouse is over it), and give us an additional horizontal tab bar option to suppress horizontal tabs completely (except for the main URL/search box of course) then I would be quite happy with that but oh no, Apple goes straight for the AI approach.

AI Derangement Syndrome is wild.

We have been wanting AI and options to make life easier for decades.

People With ADS think the world revolves around them only when the number of AI applications and users is the fastest growing sector on the planet since the 90s.

It’s not going away. If you don’t want to use it don’t use it. These are computers. They have toggles. They have menus. You don’t need to enable or use every feature.

Just don’t go around slamming everyone who does like the features like those blue haired commies at protest marches who have a very mixed up mind.

Not liking or wanting something does not make it some kind of syndrome. Get some perspective... As long as they have a toggle and I can turn it off I am fine, but if you think there will always be a toggle then you are naive. Also, where did I slam anyone for wanting it. I just said I didn't want it.

I really just want a simple feature/toggle to let me 'highlight' the ACTIVE TAB. Seems like they have reverted to hard-to-differentiate tabbing ... again.
