Apple's existing Optimized Battery Charging feature keeps a Mac from charging to 100 percent until it's needed for use, with the option using your daily charging routine to determine when to charge to full. While Optimized Battery Charging can help preserve battery life, it still regularly allows a Mac to charge to 100 percent.

The problem with all these "let the software manage things for you from your routines" so-called features is that it only works for people who actually have a repeating daily life with daily routines that the software can learn from.

For some of us, the software cannot learn and apply anything that makes sense out of our chaotic lives. Instead of helping us, it becomes an active problem and a nuisance.

Giving us the option to let us control the maximum state of battery charge is much better.

I used AlDente paid version for a few years then realised other than charge limiting to 80%, I never used any of its functionality so switched to free version.
This doesn't make any sense, unless you're cancelling the subscription model? I've got the Lifetime license and here are the differences to the free version:

my M1 Pro being at 80% under AppleCare actually turned out to be a blessing. Took it in at 80% thinking I would be able to get a battery replacement. failed the test and they took the little fella away...

Got a call few days later to come pick up a new MacBook Pro. My M1 Pro had been damaged during the repair (looks like someone dropped something on it and bent the entire thing). Walked out with a new M4 Pro.

Glad my battery was bad 🙂

well it didn't make any sense to me either hence the cancellation. (if I understand your statement correctly)

I was originally on Setapp, but eventually realised I was paying a monthly premium for a load of software I never touched. I then moved to a standalone annual sub for two years, but during my annual "subscription audit", I noticed I wasn't actually using any of AlDente’s Pro features besides the basic charge limiting. Back to the free version it is.

My daily life does not repeat, and it's working fine for me. Yes, sometimes I leave the house with one or more devices charged only to 80%. But that's okay; it's not going to leave me stranded.

I do like having options!

All the new features in the world will not fix this disaster of an OS. Nobody wanted them, nobody cares except Apple Marketers. Disgusting. Try fixing what's broken first.

Ok that makes sense then coming from a 2 yr subscription to using the free version (almost giving you a lifetime license). If you're ok with the limitations then that's a good move. Looking at the comparison I posted, I'd say that in retrospect, I appreciate the following the most:

1. Control MagSafe LED
2. Top Up
3. Calibration Mode
4. Live Status Icons
5. Scheduling Tasks

You’re worrying far too much about your battery. And no, there’s no evidence charging it just to 50% is best for long term battery health.

Randomly off the top of my head I’d say there’s an argument to be had that charging repeatedly only to 50% of capacity may give you the opposite intended outcome. You might want to up that to at least 80%. My AlDente is set to 86%.

Worth pointing out, my new MBA in 2015 got the use of no such app and I used the machine a lot and never had any battery issues for many years. Gut feel based on years of modern Apple laptop use is these apps are not doing as much for battery health as you think they are.
Agreed, especially now multiple tests (even by Macrumors) showing charging our phones to 80% is pointless.. I just felt more stress in the end starting my day off with 20% less then usual.. And after a year my battery health was no better or worse then had I just stayed at 100%.

MacBook Air M1, 576 charge cycles and shows 86% battery life.... Still going strong frankly. Used no app, did nothing special. Sometimes plugged in all day, sometimes not.

This all just reminds me of "Night Shift", the feature that made screens look weird and yellow "because sleep". Where is the empiric data that this helps battery life?

Where's the failure all a user has to do is do into battery settings and use the slider.
Where's the failure? In willing compliance. 😆

Tell me you've never experienced seniors as paying customers, unwilling to change.

I paid for the whole battery, I'm going to use it! / I paid for 490 horsepower and I'm going to use it!

You will likely have access to an Apple shortcut to achieve this action, either way.
hopefully, been waiting for it a long time on the iphone so far. Instead Apple decided to spend their time on lots of shiny UI stuff nobody asked for rather than fix basic stuff

Another AlDante Pro user here. I do use their sailing mode and temperature limiting although I wonder about the need for that. I sometimes use the dashboard to figure out the energy consumption of connected devices. Don't know how well it works. My battery is at 98% after 14 months heavy daily use, 93 cycles.

Guess the guys from App House Kitchen aren't too enthusiastic about this Apple update?

The majority of upgrades are at the app level that could be rolled out to users across an array of iOS versions. But noooo, can’t do that now can we?
This is an upgrade to Mac OS. What are you complaining about iOS for? This doesn't degrade anything on the iOS app space.
