11000 sq feet in santa clara near their HQ? Sounds like something more for their own internal use (eg. test lab) rather than the NC data center which is something for public use.

Apple just did some data-center type upgrades (huge AC and power units, concrete walled the windows, etc) to one of their buildings on Bubb Road in Cupertino; that building could tape out to 11K SF.

Not a big place, maybe just something to replace the small one in Cup that burned down last year.
 
I would imagine that Apple has largely discreet presence in other national Data Centers across the country in order to replicate and maintain availability of their services. I can't imagine that they would spawn all of these new online offerings, if they didn't have a highly available, highly redundant infrastructure behind it.
