Putting my normal sarcastic tone aside, I feel these patents are absolutely a waste of time and money. To those of you hating on Samsung: have you actually used one of their Galaxy S smartphones? They really are great phones. Comfortable to hold, endless customization, and better call quality than the iPhone. Those who don't use one because they're stuck in Apple ecosystem is understandable, but those who refuse one just because its Samsung is NOT.

Good for Apple ...round #2! ( first one was for 1 billion ).
i hope Apple wins ... stealing is not acceptable .
if Samsung wants to "borrow" these patents then pay up.... simple!

and no it's not "good for the consumer".... we want more innovations; not more stealing or copycats !

Oh and here you go for those with very short memories, I present the 2004 Windows CE Neonode N1m WITH Slide To Unlock

Apples slide to lock utilizes a different implementation that differentiates it from Neonode.

First, when the iPhone goes into standby, it is automatically locked, where the Neonode you specifically have to push the "Lock button". Apple uses a visual indicator where the Neonode does not.

If you watch the video you will see it does have a visual indication, does Samsung have an exact copy of the iPhone slide to unlock graphic? I bet it does not, so the argument you are using can be used to state Samsung has not copied anything.

The argument is for the slide to UNLOCK feature, not the lock feature of which you press an iPhones power button right? A feature that phones have had for years.

This is a paid shill if I ever read one. Samsung phones are junk, have you read the S5 reviews? If your going android, get a nexus. Samsung was fined for paying people to write negatively about completion on Internet forums. Samsung is desperate.

And also, Apple is demanding 2 billion based on what a tiny 1000 people example group state? When it is an Android feature to have slide to unlock is it not? Oh and let's not forget Apple was not the first with the slide to unlock feature.

This seriously smells of desperation

Who implemented slide to unlock for a touchscreen computing device before apple? I don't think actual locks that slide to unlock can nullify a software patent. I am not being sarcastic, I am genuinely curious if someone used it in software before apple...

EDIT: Nevermind, I went back and read the rest of the comments and now feel dumb.

Apple Calls in Experts to Explain Why Samsung Owes $2B in Damages

No, he's not a paid shill. I have Galaxy Note 3 as well as iPhone 5s and he's absolutely correct.

Nexus is absolutely the way to go. If not, the new HTC one looks beautiful. I love HTC design. Why can't they make the nexus phones....

No; the court shouldn't consider a ruling by a foreign court. Europe's patent laws are different. So it would be like telling someone to go look at a sugar cookie recipe in order to make chocolate chip cookies.

Second, this isn't a case about whether Apple deserves the patent. They have it. So the case is about whether Samsung infringed that patent and if so how much it's worth. The "Apple just copied someone else" defense is relevant to whether Apple should be granted the patent. It's not relevant to whether Samsung infringed the patent.

+1...well put.

How are they junk? I have had nothing but good experiences since the S2. I've had the S3, S4, Note 2, and Note 3. Pure Google is also great, but I don't trust LG. I have read that so many people had problems with the Nexus 5.

Probably because they already made a Nexus phone. The 1st iteration.

That isn't a reason why they can't make the next one. I actually like what LG has made, its a pretty good looking phone, but as far as android phones go I think HTC has the best design by a long shot.

Rumor is, HTC is making a Nexus 8 so at least there's that to look forward. Though I'm not particularly fond of Android tablets, it should be a solid reentry for HTC back into the tablet market.

Call a wah-bulance

Apple is so pathetic. They stole their ass e s off to get the Mac going and now want to hit samsung for 2B for slide to unlock? Sad really. All this proves is that one day a new up and comer will innovate past Apple and make them look like microsoft (not Microsoft Windows 1.0 but Microsoft Millenium/Vista)

Nice, I really want to see HTC do well. It is a shame that Samsung is completely crushing all other Android OEMs and might end up putting companies like HTC out of business. I would really love to see a massive company buy HTC and give them the cash to compete while leaving their design team alone to do what they are doing.

I don't think it will be an up and comer. It will be google (possibly by buying an up and comer). If anyone is going to pull the carpet out from under apple it will be google, just as apple did to microsoft. Fortunately for apple, they take google seriously unlike microsoft when apple made a comeback.

Yeah, at one point all I bought were HTC phones. Always been a fan of their form factors and they seem to couple it with good software. Definitely be good to get another major player in the game. Personally, I'd like to see Microsoft give Apple and Samsung a run for their money.

I am not saying Samsung did not do wrong in many ways but at the same time Apple is no better than them. Apple fanboys love to stay ignorant and be arrogant instead of seeing the truth that Apple is pretty much doing the same. Copying and stealing ideas from other mobile OS and who can forget the jailbreak community? Lets be real here, Apple sees Samsung as competition and afraid of them therefore doing their best to squash competition. Why is Apple not going after other companies..that are also most likely infringing on their patents? The same argument when people sues Apple because they are well known and can make $$ out of them.

Apple should spend $$ and time on innovating like they have and are known for instead of going through this big drama. No one is going to buy Samsung phone for whatever the crap reason they are providing. People buy Apple for what it is..and can def tell apart between iPhone and Samsung phones. Give it up both of you and something useful instead of same old same old.

With Nadella at the helm I finally like what I am seeing from microsoft. Ballmer was a complete idiot in my opinion and is solely to blame for the complete downturn that company took. I refused to pay a dollar to them until he was gone. Now I am rooting for them to make a comeback as well. I like Windows Phone 8 and I like the surface tablets. I think we will see microsoft make a comeback in the next decade but they will never relive their past success with windows and office.

I still failed to see any visual indicator for a "slide to unlock". I'm not talking about any Samsung slide to unlock feature only the one specific to the Neonode.

While I'm not a patent lawyer, one might argue the process by which to unlock the screen it first has to be locked to start the process.

Apple isn't going after other companies because they signed licensing deals with them. Samsung wouldn't agree to a deal, thats why they are in court right now.

It's really sad how many people don't understand the difference between broad ideas and implementation. Saying "Apple stole slide to unlock" really shows how little some of you understand.

No, apple did not steal slide to unlock. They invented their current implementation, hence the granted patent. Apple did not however invent a GESTURE driven unlock. But that's not what is patented. What is patented is Apples specific implementation of the slide to unlock lock screen. What Samsung copied was Apples implementation and patent, not just the broad idea of a gesture driven unlock.

If you really can't see the difference between Apples patented slide to unlock versus the one phone you people claim did it first, then you really have no business talking about patents or user interface design in general. You can argue the merits of patents or the morality of software patents, but you can't say Apple stole slide to unlock.
