Curious if anyone knows, what are all the black and white "boxes" covering the top of the tunnels and such before dirt goes over? It looks like foam, but is it just used to help shape the earth before putting dirt on top or does it serve some other purpose?

It's a form of geofoam that is used on green roofs. It allows the contractors to build up contours in a way that is much lighter than back filling with just earth. As a result, the roof structure (of the building or tunnels) doesn't need as big of sections of steel and costs less. Essentially, it allows Apple to stay true to form and make the actual structure thinner. :)

I look forward to seeing these update videos, but for some reason, this one didn't seem to deliver much. Maybe it's just because most of the work at this point is interior work, so exterior flyovers are not going to show as much of a change as you see when steel is going up.
I was thinking the same. Maybe release a video every two months at this point?

May? lol

HAS. It's been going up since the Cupertino City Council gave preliminary approval for the development back in 2008(?).

I knew it lol. Nice for those that live there. When they built up DC or renovated (whichever the correct term), residents were being offered over 2 mil for their residences as I understand.

Has Apple ever stated what ths building is for ? I can't see a rationale as Apple doesn't actually make anything. It is beginning to appear as a "Tower of Babel" and we all know where that led. Come to think of it Apple is heading in that direction too so maybe it's a metaphor of itself. It will all be "reimagined" as a supermarket or bowling alley.

Are you serious? Apple sales were almost one quarter trillion dollars over the last 12 months ($238 B). Try and think about the scope of an organization needed for R&D, product development, software development, labs, many services, support, special projects, marketing, and myriad overhead infrastructurel needed to generate that level of income.

Still, that is just one of Apple's facilities in the silicon valley area. There are many more existing buildings, more being built, and more real estate being acquired for constructing even more space. With 110,00 full time employee and subtracting out around half in retail stores, that demands a lot of office space.

With respect to "making anything," if you are referring to manufacturing and assembly, are you aware that most major consumer goods companies, including Apple, employ overseas contract manufacturing in China?

I wondered too. From a distance it looks like giant blocks of polystyrene foam, but not sure why. The auditorium has something similar and I could see those being made of insulation foam.

i guess even Apple is used go this now they have also replaced the privacy fence.

Wow. That would certainly be an amazing building/campus to work in. Although maybe working for Apple, now days, would not be so amazing?

They are not underground mostly due to earthquake code.
It's not an earthquake problem. It's a terrorism problem.

Earthquakes are nothing compared to the still-unresolved problem of car bombs and the terrorists who make them AND find easy entry into the US.

I would love to Tour this facility. Unfortunately, it will have tighter restrictions than the Pentagon.
There will be private tours but only by association and merit. Tesla is doing a similar policy with their manufacturing line.
