I’ve been sideloading for nearly a year in the US, where you have to use a dev account and renew weekly. I’ll take the minor inconvenience over switching back to the encrapified native YouTube app.

I've gone further and ponied up the $100/year so I can easily put Apps on all my devices, including my Apple TVs, and not have to worry about signing renewals.

It's amazing what hot garbage so many of the Apps are when not using alt versions that give us control of the experiences.

Reddit, YouTube, even Instagram ... all WORLDS better when I can tailor the experience to how I want them .. not how these dreadful companies jam their crap experience down our throats with their defaults.

The software industry was doing just fine before Apple decided it was going to bleed customers and developers forever. We didn't have 30% fees and we weren't restricted on where we could buy software until Apple magically invented this business model and its sycophants started rationalizing the obvious cash grab and censorship.
Just wondering for reference what year did you start buying Apple products. Software sales channels and App stores are very different segments of "software industry".

It's funny how so many people say if users want to sideload, then Apple should not be held responsible for anything bad that happens (and which is totally fair). But they never argue for the opposite, that if users are forced to use Apple's App store and they are harmed in any way that Apple should be held responsible and be required to make the user whole.

This is a good point.

People don't understand this. YouTube without ads every 5 seconds.

First, Epic and Tim Sweeney suck, the way they have gone about this has been awful, and on principle they should be tossed out for how shady they have been through this whole process.

That said, it will be interesting to see what the court comes up with for a fee structure. They should have the information about what it would take to make the App Store profitable, and that's really a key factor...Apple has to make enough of a profit to support apps and a store, if they don't the whole thing shuts down. And, apps cost money at some level for all of the stuff Apple puts together to support them, even the absolutely free ones cost Apple in terms of software development, hosting, and bandwidth. Whether they are charging too much or not enough should become apparent after the court analysis...it will be highly amusing if the court determines that Apple should be charging more for the App Store and is absorbing some of its costs elsewhere, an outcome where Apple is told to raise its prices would be pretty ironic.

The argument over side loading shouldn't come into play for that part of it, that's an argument to open the iOS platform up to installations outside of Apple's control...there are so many bad things that could come out of it that the few good things for those of us that could do it securely really aren't worth it for Apple. Charges for in-app purchases should be looked at though...I'm not even going to try to guess at the most fair method for that, it's really complicated.

At least we'll get some closure on this soon, and perhaps this will then set a standard that all the other App Stores (including Epic's thing) can follow...we all know that other app stores are set up like Apple but have gotten a pass in a lot of this. The biggest question is if this benefits the consumer in the end...that's not why Sweeney took this on despite his protestations, and his ill intent just might turn out to cause more trouble for people once this is all settled.

If its too pricey for them to keep their store maybe someone would do better job with their own store instead.

27% far too much.

Apple will probably offer 26.9% as an alternative 😉

I realize/assume you were joking but unless Apple can come up very solid "math" to support that kind of figure, it would be a mistake for them to come in high. They need to show they are making good faith attempts to comply, especially after being found in contempt of court.

The percentage will likely end up somewhere in the teens, at least initially. Then it will be up to the Supreme Court to decide the validity of the District Court contempt finding and, therefore, whether the 27% (or similar) can potentially be reinstated.

In the App Store the contract as I recall, is with the developer not Apple. The above is a false dichotomy. Apple does its best to vet the app store. That is not a guarantee of 100%.

People are deciding good guys vs bad guys for each side, but really both side sucks in this particular issue. I know Epic is just trying to keep the cut for themselves and not going to lower their prices, but the anti-steering provisions and the technology fees for not using App Store payments on Apple's side leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
Apple is the host, you must pay the host, that simple, thats just good basic business. Epic gets to take advantage of the eco system Apple created and fought very hard for, they spend millions yearly in advertising their product and store which in the end helps epic's sales. If epic wants to make their own device and store they can do that and keep all profits. I hate when people are happy to pay fee's until that 30% turns into millions. It happens in every industry and its sick.

Why should Apple give away its intellectual property.

What intellectual property would Apple be giving away? Giving access to or sharing is not giving it away.

If a dev doesn’t think the App Store is the right fit they can promulgate their wares elsewhere. Right?

It can be very difficult for a developer to completely ignore such a significant part of a market even if they hate or find unfair the terms, fees, etc. they are being asked/required to follow or pay. If Apple's app store market share was much less then it would be different.

Every company that sells products (stores, app stores, etc). Make money off of that sale. Somewhere between 10-30% and sometimes even over. Simply becasue if they didn't, they wouldn't be able to pay their employees and the store would go out of buissiness.

Now Apple allows developers to offer a free app on their store. This free app is free to host on their store and free to download. Apple does not make any money off of that download.

Now that App adds it's own store, to for example sell virtual items. Items that directly compete with the items sold on the App Store. I think it's nothing but reasonable that the app pays a fee to offer these sales. Since they got their customers for free.

So is ad blocking the main selling point of these alt apps? Why don't YouTube, etc. block them themselves rather than asking Apple to do so during review?
