I'm just curious... what's actually inside an apple care box? Thanks.

A CD with Tech Tool Plus, a paper with the AppleCare serial number, and terms documentation.

in my opinion... that's a waste. Why woulden't they just do this stuff over the internet without waiting time/materials?

The box is for getting AppleCare after you've already purchased the machine.

If you buy a new Mac online and get AppleCare your hardware is automatically registered and the materials are shipped later.

In store they register you and just give you the AppleCare box for a new purchase.

Yup I agree with you since you can download Techtool from apple's site. I guess people just like to have something in hand when they buy something.
