AppleCare is fantastic. I highly recommend it for portable computers. For desktop units, it's less compelling. For iDevices, ditto. But for the various flavors of MacBooks, it's an excellent deal. There are just so many subsystems that can and do fail within three years: hard disks, displays, backlights, keyboards, even the power supply. With AppleCare, you're covered.

Agree completely.

In general, Apple tend to honour their warranties, which was one of the main reasons I switched to Apple from PCs over three years ago. In any case, I have had Applecare on my MBP and currently have it on my MBA. It gives peace of mind for three years, enhances re-sale value, and it is something I have actually used (and needed) when I had my MBP.

It is definitely worth it, to my way of thinking. However, you don't have to get it until the end of the first year - i.e. the anniversary of the date you bought the computer, the day the one year warranty is due to expire. But, and it is a big but, you do have to get it before that date, not after. Apple will not allow you to buy Applecare after the expiry of the first year, even by a few hours. Granted, a few have been allowed, or permitted, to do so when the deadline had slipped by, but it is an occasional privilege extended as a goodwill gesture by Apple, not something given - or to be expected - as of right.

Cheers

applecare is all about peace of mind. If you are not confident in keeping it safe and in good conditions then get apple care. Most likely people who go on forums and post are pretty aware of electronics and take pretty good care of their stuff. But at the end of the day its all about peace of mind.

PS. Applecare doesnt cover accidental damage. which is more often than not what happens when a computer needs repair.

My concern with adding a rider to my homeowner's insurance is that if I make a claim, that will be a factor in my future insurance rates and if they use a laptop claim as an excuse to jack up my overall policy rates, even for just a few years, it could easily outweigh the benefits of the laptop claim.

Agreed. This is precisely why i haven't added any of my laptops or phones onto my policy. Not worth it. The only items added to my home owner's insurance was my watches :)
