Hello I just sold my iPhone 5S on eBay and it has 1 year of apple care plus remaining. Does the Apple Care follow the iPhone so that the new user has the remaining one year? I'm not looking to keep it but just want to make sure I don't have to do anything else.

Thanks for any insight.

You can call apple and tell them you want to cancel and they will refund you a prorated amount.

Apple Care Plus - Sold my iPhone 5S

Accurately you need to complete some Apple paperwork to transfer AppleCare Plus to the new owner.

eBay states this http://www.ebay.com/gds/AppleCare-Transfer-Procedures-/10000000009819939/g.html

I did that for an eBay buyer. In practice a store may not care, but it could be a problem.

You can only transfer it once. So an eBay buyer may not want that done if they are shipping/ reselling overseas.

See section 10 of Apple's T&A here for the official statement. https://www.apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/appforiphonenaen.html

Yeah, I'm through "giving" my AppleCare away to other people. As soon as I sell the phone, I get a refund with what is left on the AppleCare. It just seems like it doesn't really help with the sale especially when the phone will end up overseas.

I agree 100% and I think that I have seen your name before on a certain DBS site

Can the remaining time be transferred to another device? I plan on upgrading every year.

No they usually refund then you have to purchase the new plan for the new device at full price. Just have to wait a bit in the refund. No biggie though.

It didn't really help me with the sale. I ended up lowering my price by $50 and refunding the AppleCare and it sold within a day. It had been up on swappa and Craigslist for two weeks with the AppleCare and all I got were people wanting to offer me amounts that were way too low for a 5s (like $200-$275 for a 32gb).

I just called apple and they said o they do not offer refunds on applecare. It stays with the device, and can't even be transferred to another owner.

That's odd. I've always been able to get a prorated refund on all my devices. Just not this time as I skipped a cycle and it was used up.

None of that is true whatsoever. It can be transferred (it says so on Apple's site). And I know they give refunds because I just got one. But you have to speak to AppleCare not Apple's general customer service.

The person you spoke with was wrong -- twice! LOL

How to request a refund for an AppleCare product
Understand the cancellation and refund guidelines

If you cancel within 30 days of purchasing your AppleCare product, you'll get a full refund less the value of any service already provided.

If you cancel more than 30 days after purchasing your AppleCare product, you'll get a pro rata refund based on the percentage of unexpired AppleCare product coverage less the value of any service already provided. You can find the cancellation fee in the AppleCare product Terms and Conditions.

Is the AppleCare Protection Plan or AppleCare+ transferable?
Yes. If you choose to sell or give away your Apple product, you can also transfer the ownership of the AppleCare Protection Plan or AppleCare+. Please see the Terms and Conditions for complete details.
