can AppleCare plus be purchased after 60 days? I thought apple care plus replaced AppleCare, can AppleCare still be purchased before the end of 1 year?
As maflynn advised above both are still available.

The older AC is like a warranty extension and does not cover accidental damage

Please note if you do not buy AC or AC+ then some of the technical support is only valid for 90 days, but likely they will not refuse to assist, it's no big loss and you can always pop in to a store for a bit of hand holding :D

If you buy a 2017 MacBook Pro (any model), it comes with a very high probability of keyboard failure and replacement "down-the-line". In some instances, more than one replacement will be required (the "replacements" seem as prone to failure as the originals).

The replacement is expensive (see other posts in this thread). Apple will pay during the 1-year warranty. But what happens when the keyboard fails at 15 months old?

Even with AppleCare, many users are going to face a $600 keyboard/topcase replacement after 36 months have passed. This may change if the "KeyGate™" lawsuit plaintiffs prevail.

Actually, my recommendation is that one NOT buy a 2017 MacBook Pro at all.
Wait for the 2018's later this year.
Or pick up a refurbished 2015 design -- that keyboard doesn't break.

I've had so many issues with my mbp, if I had to pay for them myself without warranty it would have cost me as much as an entirely new laptop. It is ridiculous that an overpriced laptop has so many issues, but such is life.

I don't think there's much choice in the matter anymore. With the newer thin designs, many components are integrated or glued. Repairs are increasingly expensive. I wouldn't dream of buying a new Mac notebook without Applecare. Sad state of affairs.

I wouldn't buy the 2016/2017 MacBook Pro. PERIOD

No way would I want to be stuck with this lemon.

Resurrecting this post to ask if anyone knows where I could still purchase the regular AppleCare plan, since I don't really need the accidental coverage.

You can purchase it over the phone from Apple. Call the Applecare support number

There are free keyboard replacement programs for the butterfly keyboards, 4 years from the date of purchase. Also, if you purchased your laptop with certain credit cards, you get free extended warranty when the manufacture warranty runs out (Citi, for example extends the warranty another 2 years beyond the manufacturer's warranty) for free.

I do not buy a system without it. I used my systems heavily.
It's always good to check into the battery shortly before expiration. I frequently ended up getting replacement.

Ahhh thought it was strange when the Apple guy said 3 years now all makes sense I got AppleCare+ which is an insurance pretty much well thats ace hahaa

I decided to get it. Apple representative said they no longer offer the regular AppleCare. I kind of wish they did, perhaps at a slightly lower price. I take care of my things and accident damage is unlikely.

I am still somewhat on a fence with whether or not it's "worth it." Although I had a ridiculously good experience with AppleCare when I was in college. Long story short, after four repairs, Apple replaced my MacBook with a brand new one that was one generation younger... I literally got a call from someone at Apple who said "this is not the experience we want for us customers." Blew my mind.

Then again, I only used Apple one more time after that with the last iMac I had. I've been a customer since 2002 or so... Apple gear is reliable overall, but what we don't typically think about is the fact that we do get 3 years of tech support. For under $300 that alone seems like a steal, right?
