Electric vehicle charging network ChargePoint today announced integration with CarPlay, which adds new EV charging data to CarPlay-compatible cars. Drivers can look up nearby chargers, check station status, start a session, get directions to the nearest station, and more.

For convenience, there are filters that will sort stations based on the speed of the charger, cost, availability, and plug type. The CarPlay app also provides access to a list of favorite charging spots and a join waitlist option when stations are full.

To access the new ChargePoint functionality, vehicle owners will need a device updated to iOS 14 or above in a CarPlay vehicle along with the ChargePoint app, which, when connected, will provide charging information on the in-car infotainment system.

ChargePoint is also available through a new ChargePoint widget in the Today View for iPhone that lets drivers locate nearby stations and check real-time charging status, plus it is available on the Apple Watch.

Do most EVs support CarPlay/android auto? My only experience is with Tesla and they use their own infotainment system. Rivian is another company that comes to mind that is very exciting. I don't think they will support CarPlay. I guess my question is, how many EVs are using CarPlay? Bolt, Leaf?

CarPlay need charger system integration for all EV chargers, not just ChargePoint. Everything from electrify America, EVgo, and all level 3 chargers. They all need to talk to each other as a system as well as the car so you can painlessly navigate long distance and be automatically routed the same way Tesla superchargers are integrated into the nav system. Makes long distance travel seamless.

This would make CarPlay a killer feature for ev.

I think so. I know bmw has CarPlay as well. Wish Tesla had CarPlay 😩

I am hoping that Apple’s EV integration in iOS 14 expands to more vehicles. The initial support was quite minimal.

2nd gen leafs do, but the first gen ones don’t, sadly, support CarPlay. I wish I liked android more - Android’s auto has a Bluetooth-only mode that Apple is completely missing. Siri doesn’t seem to work well with my voice, so I’d have to unlock my phone just to bring up maps or music while driving.

Tesla's already have this option. You can specify which chargers you want to see/not see (eg: level 2, 3, or just super chargers)

The Bolt does.

I guess the VWs will too since their current cars support CarPlay.

Totally agree. This is a good start though. As a ChargePoint customer I'm happy to see this integration done! The next step is further integration with the EV control system and CarPlay. I suspect Apple and others are working on an API through which EV data can be accessed while still in CarPlay, allowing for Tesla-like features that can inform when you need to charge next, and where, etc.

Other than Tesla, most newish EVs support CarPlay/AA.

The ChargePoint app (including within CarPlay) does show stations from more than just ChargePoint. There are some "roaming agreements" similar to how mobile worked 20 years ago, but a lot of that depends on stations being networked and having reliable signals to see availability and so on (stations in the middle of nowhere aren't always network-reachable 24x7 so you may not know many details until you arrive).

Apple has wireless CarPlay support. Not a lot of vehicles support it, but there are some usb adaptors that allow wireless. About $130 but I think worth it.

My Honda Clarity does (it is a PHEV).

The pictured dash IS a Leaf (current generation).

I want the PlugShare app on CarPlay for a start. But as long as every charging network is going to have their own app, they all need to get their apps into CarPlay.
true this might be a good temporary solution. Does plugshare support google maps navigation and charging with routing? I never actually used it while driving, only when I'm park overnight traveling.

I'm seeing more chargepoint level 3 fast chargers on road stops. They're excellent using CCS and chaedemo. It seems like theyre investing more on infrastructure.

This is great except if I charge too much my car will explode. Thanks, GM!
Indeed. I can only imagine the posts here if Apple said you should not charge your iPhone 12 above 90% until they figure out why it catches fire. I hope GM finds a way to make things right. Maybe after the actual recall fix is figured out they can stuff a few more cells into the car to give it 105% range.

Nissan has the ariya coming up. A little suv electric and they support CarPlay

is that what the bolt recall is, if you charge over 90% risk of thermal meltdown?

Excited to try this out tomorrow in my Hyundai Ioniq, it would be very cool to use CarPlay for charging stations instead of the built-in Nav, which is fine but really not to the level of Apple’s CarPlay integration.

This is nice because the Bolt charging integration from GM leaves much to be desired.

Actual mapping and range estimates and charge arrival percentages would be great, but I doubt chargepoint does that.
Tesla’s system is the benchmark. It’s gloriously fantastic.
