iOS 27 will include a nice quality-of-life improvement for those who frequently split bills with friends and family, allowing them to easily take a photo of a receipt and generate payment requests for different people, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The feature will be tied to the peer-to-peer Apple Cash feature in the Wallet app, which lets users easily send money to other people and even make purchases.

It would be more helpful if it could interface with other services like Venmo, but I can see why they want to lock people into Apple Cash 😅

They really are focussing on the vitally important issues, I see...

Honestly, even when bill sharing was a part of my life, I'd not have needed advanced computer tech to help.

Or you could just pull up your phone's calculator -- or use a pen and a napkin -- to divide it yourself and then tell the other people around the table how much they owe.

There are reports that kids are no longer able to tell time using a non-digital clock. This is the AI analogue of that. One of the many downsides of AI is that it's going to make people in many ways dumber and less capable of fending for themselves in the world.

Why would I take a picture of the bill like it's the year 2019? I thought new Siri was supposed to figure these things out for me just by asking?
Because you can itemize the bill and assign certain items to certain people. This isn’t a plain vanilla split the bill total by x ways tool. It scans the bill’s items and you assign who had what then calculates their total

Yeah, but if this feature could split the bill by items and include the tax and tip portion, that would be awesome. Not everyone drinks (which adds a lot to a tab)
I kind of like getting loaded and splitting the bill equally. Less math and guilt. Everyone else contributed to how drunk I get, so that makes everything ok

This is bizarre to me. Most modern restaurants [that I have seen] can give separate bills to people. But in the case of one person covering the whole thing and others paying him equally...well, that's 1 second of brain function to figure that out.

I’m generally all for tech stuff, but this reminds me of how people don’t know how to make change anymore because every POS tells them what the change should be.

All these studies showing that GPS makes your spatial memory worse, GPT is hurting critical thinking…

I love being able to tap a word and get the definition when I’m reading a book on my phone, but lately I’ve been thinking I might benefit from doing a little more reading/writing/arithmetic in the real world.

They can. And yet many (restaurants) won't.

It's pretty common in places like Chicago and Boston to not split checks. Boston (probably 15-20 years ago) was the first place I encountered this. They legit will not split checks at many places.

It's really a non-issue now with things like venmo, but prior to that it was a pain in the ass eating out in a group.

Perhaps it's a visual intelligence thing, using the camera vs taking a photo. Either way this would be nice if it worked correctly and let you quickly figure out variables like grouping some orders and add tax + tip accordingly.
