I'm a big fan of TC, (have a 2TB model) after upgrading from the older flat TC. I do realise Synology support Time Machine backups and could use that if/when my TC dies and is non-replaceable.
However, my Airport Expresses (2 of them) do act weirdly sometimes: one of them, despite being connected via RJ45/Powerline ethernet, seems to need a power-cycle now and again.
I had been thinking of going Ubiquity for my home wifi needs, especially after reading this Troy Hunt blog about them: https://www.troyhunt.com/ubiquiti-all-the-things-how-i-finally-fixed-my-dodgy-wifi

If you just focus on the extreme views I don't think you are going to get much satisfaction from this forum.
Disagree. You're going to find a great deal of satisfaction because MR forums are replete with those extremes. You'll immediately find one that either resonates with or triggers yours.

1976: Jobs in Apple=Apple success
1985: Jobs leaves Apple=Apple Fails
1997: Jobs in Apple=Apple success
2011: Jobs leaves Apple=Apple fails

We might be living the year 1985 guys!

That being said, I never cared for those pricey routers which I believe do not play nice with other devices. Ido care, though, about MBP, Automator, OS X and iPads.

"...to try to sharpen the company's focus on consumer products that generate the bulk of its revenue."

Or in other words "sharp sales practice" in my opinion. No amount of corporate euphemisms will conceal naked profiteering and greed at the cost of technology. Another profit maximisation idea from Angela Ahrendts.

Sure, Tim Cook should go, but he's not the only one!

Well I've read through most of the posts and it's generally disgruntled Apple customers who are confused, disappointed or angry to hear a product they have been relying on for many years will not be developed beyond the current models. Even though there are a lot of posts expressing their confusion, disappointment and anger, there are also posts discussing the pros and cons of alternative products.

Of course some members here may be what you dismiss as "whiners" but there's another group who always seem to take the opposite extreme and defend Apple at all costs. The posts from either of those sides doesn't add a lot of value to the discussion but they are entitled to post their opinions. The vast majority of our members live in the middle ground and are generally happy with their Apple products but may sometimes ask questions about the direction the company is taking and whether it's going to fit their future needs.

If you just focus on the extreme views I don't think you are going to get much satisfaction from this forum.

Well said. The irony is that Abigazal mostly just whines about the "whiners". So how is he any different from the 'bad element' that he rails against?

Can't say that I'm surprised, If they stopped producing their Cinema Displays, the router which is pricey was next on the chopping block

You are right. I realise I have been quite brash with my words and I promise I will do my best to rein in my words and my attitude. I admit that I have been out of line but I am honestly getting very upset and frustrated with the state of affairs here.

If you look at Ars Technica, their articles too can garner hundreds of replies, but the overwhelming majority of them are very polite, well-crafted and extremely informative. You can tell that the people there really know their stuff, and they can put forth their points of view on a respectful and cogent manner. No matter how controversial the topic is, the community polices themselves well. I can scroll through 300 comments at one go and it's a pleasure to read.

Here? It can be a real chore getting past the first few pages sometimes.

You can say "Yeah, but you can choose not to read the comments if you don't like them." It's like when I want a quiet picnic at the park and then all these people come in with their radios blaring at full volume and disturbing the peace. Yes, I could, but the point is that I should not have to. I just want to be able to have a civil discussion with many other people here who share similar interests and it's very upsetting when I can't.

To the posters who frequent these forums, are you seriously telling me that you are okay with all this? If you are unhappy with what Apple is doing, surely there are better ways of phrasing your words than what I am seeing here?

This nonsense seriously has got to stop.

Stupid is as stupid does.
It makes little overall sense to do away with one part of the system when it is a necessary part for the system to function as designed.

Most people would prefer to have a system that is designed to function with parts working together, and that comes from one business brand.

"REPLACE WITH GENUINE :apple: PARTS."

After a disappointing few years. 2016 was the end of a fifteen year relationship. I sat down and thought what I would say to Tim Cook if we ever met. Suddenly I found myself typing out my thoughts which evolved into an email referenced below. I know Tim Cook will never read it, nonetheless it was fifteen years of my life, work and otherwise, that seemed it was necessary for me to send. As I referenced this very thread, I thought I'd share it with you as well.

Times are definitely changing, for better or for worse. Hope everyone is having a great night (or morning)!
well done, the only thing is you wrote "2 to 3 pounds, and you probably meant ounces.

But yes, watching the Steve Jobs interview is heartbreaking, since I agree with you that thats exactly what is happening to Apple now.

Is there any benefit to switching away from Apple's 802.11ac Airport Time Capsules to another 802.11ac (or 802.11ad) solution on a home network? Would there be a noticeable performance difference?

Maybe it would take longer, what so 7.2GBS plus is a slight speed increase is it, let alone MU MIMO or teiple band or other next gen wireless features other routers have....

Yeah those multi GB hourly updates will only be a few seconds faster.... I bet you use a TimeCapsuele and don't even look at other routers right? I like your judgmental attitude too, it has zero effect, shame you don't know.

Perhaps you should take a look at these features, including wireless AD Which the TimeCapsule will never have now.

And how do you propose to connect said Apple TV box to your modem then? Considering it also has to connect to your TV. Not many homes have telephone sockets next to main TVs.

There will always be something newer and faster and more efficient whether it's from Apple or any other company, but my point still stands. If you are currently using an Airport or Time Capsule that you bought years or months or days ago, you're still going to be able to use it today and very likely tomorrow. It may not be the fastest, but it still works. This idea that because there is something out there faster, better and newer makes what you have obsolete is just wrong.

Were you even born back when download speeds weren't even something? Transferring files onto 5.25" floppies took not only significant amounts of time, but generally made your computer unusable while it was writing to the disk.

This expectation of speed is something new. Even going back just a couple of years and most computers were running rotating hard drives, so that the speed of transfer from computer to computer was limited more by the read and write speed of the hard drive.

Sure, we have experienced big improvements in speed, including wireless, downloads, and SSD read write, but there remain bottlenecks that can make having a router with thousands of GB per second speed be meaningless if your internet service maxes out at 100G - unless you're regularly transferring files from computer to computer on your own network.

Time to step down Tim the numbers man Cook. You are turning Apple into just another bland company. The guy isn't a leader, he can't even do an Apple event by himself. Which means he doesn't really understand what Apple products are really about. Every Apple event, there are a dozen people doing the actual presentation.

He has no vision except profits!

Interesting to see what new products Apple comes out with. They've discontinued Monitors, Automation and Wifi. Where are the resources going?

It's interesting that this particular thread - probably because it's about a less exciting product line so emotion is kept a little more in check - contains a huge amount of guidance that apple decision makers would do well to at least read through...

Steve Jobs spotted this problem decades ago:

When he speaks of the accountants type not having any feeling in their hearts to help the customers he could have been describing Tim Cook.

As it happens Cook is doing what most accountants put in charge of Apple would do - i.e. milk it like crazy - stop or slow down development of products but ramp up prices, cut off anything (e.g. Aperture, Thunderbolt Display, now Airport routers) that might have helped customers but didn't, in itself, create huge profit.

The thing is it will work for the short term. Apple are making crazy amounts of money and will do so for a while. But fashions come and go, sooner or later someone will make something cooler than the iPhone. Then suddenly Apple will find their most loyal customers, the ones who stuck with it for decades will have lost their trust in Apple. A pity really but it's the way it goes. Funny how Microsoft made the exact same mistake with Gates picking Ballmer to follow him and Apple copied the mistake going with Cook.

I had already switched over to Chromecast Audio for streaming music throughout the house but I'd still like there to be an Apple option. Buying speakers with Airplay built in tends to be expensive. I wish they'd put out an Airplay dongle type thing like the Airport Express but that doesn't skip as much and is cheaper than $100. I don't use the TV that much or I'd even consider an Apple TV for this. Music is life.
I play my music from iTunes to multiple AppleTv's and Airport Express units. Can Chromecase duplicate this experience? Thanks for any info.

Makes me wonder if Time Machine will become an online service. It would seem a very Apple-like move at this point in time - plus, it means that if you don't own a Time Capsule, you're essentially tied to plugging in a HDD.
TimeMachine in the cloud would be a nice option. I love Crashplan but the TimeMachine interface might tempt me to move.

I think Apple should serious consider a "certified for Apple" program for all third-party hardware--essentially expand on the Made For iPhone program. Imagine being able to buy any wireless router that will be able to work easily with all Apple hardware--iMacs and Mac Pros for desktop computers, all MacBook models, and iOS devices. Okay Apple, start working with Asus, Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, and TP-Link....

This latest move just stopped me buying 2 top spec'd minis as a hedge that Apple would come to their senses in a 3 year timeframe. They just took apart the ecosystem. For sure if I have to move my home platform (router/backup/laptop/desktops) off Apple then you can guarantee I'll replace all my tablets and phones with something else too. Google's latest phone looks pretty good...

I love my Airport Express. I've had the same reliable, simple router for years and years. It's sad to see this product go. But Apple has been moving away from me for a while.

In fact, for the first time since 1998 I just bought a Windows computer, a Dell XPS 15. I have always owned MacBook Pros, but it's time to upgrade, and now I find that Apple has priced me out of their market. I need a discrete video card. That means $2499 for a MacBook Pro. I just can't pay that. So I got the XPS 15, which is arguably more powerful or at least as powerful, for $1300.

Apple has always been a little bit more expensive, but now their notebooks are way out of line, and on top of that, it feels like Apple looks at their computer line as an annoyance they have to occasionally update to keep up appearances, all while focusing on making a thinner iPhone or new watch bands. Very disheartening.
