Can we just take a minute to appreciate how clever this design is? 👏 Bravo to all those involved with its creation.

Oh, the nostalgia of the past! The era of iTunes and the iPod, when Macs stood out for their uniqueness. We were all thrilled by the potential of podcasts back then. Nowadays, with iPhones and iPads featuring Apple Music (and iTunes), the music listening experience has greatly improved compared to those times. Podcasts have evolved into something far more significant than we could have ever envisioned two decades ago.

I'm surprised they didn't include any of the huge comedy podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience or Matt & Shane's Secret Podcast

It's my understanding that Adam Curry, the Podfather, transferred the RSS index of Podcasts to Apple at that time to maintain it going forward.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. This list is not complete without Adam’s Daily Source Code.

Aw man, I’ll always treasure the days of hitting “sync” on my iPod and have it clear off finished podcasts and loading up new episodes; it felt like magic. I think Mugglecast was the first one I subscribed to, and I quickly got into TWiT, TWiP (Photography), MacBreak Weekly, Diggnation… good times!

I wonder if AI will ever be able to create an image like that. Amazing. Give this person a raise now.

Just came here to say that graphic is genius. I just paraded it around the house to show the family. One of the best designs I’ve ever seen. (And it looks like many of you are equally inspired by it!)

Crazy to think that the "pod" part of Podcasts outlived the iPod itself. Leo Laporte tried to change the name to Netcasts but it never caught on.
I’m surprised there was no mention of Leo or the TWiT network in the list or the article and how far down before either were mentioned.

To me MacBreak Weekly and Security Now are major pillars of the formation and continued relevance of podcasting.

Maybe it’s just they’re not considered mainstream in the same way as a Kardashian vs Linus Torvalds would.

Well done graphics, I didn’t notice until I scrolled by the second time much faster. Very subtle

Guess I am the only person on earth who never listened to a podcast....
It's kinda like saying "I've never watched a movies" or "I've never read a book". There's absolute trash (frankly, most of it, that's why some people are skeptical) and top-notch university professors just giving you free lessons.
Give it a try :)

No Tiki Bar TV?
Jeff Macpherson (Dr Tiki) and Lara Doucette (Lala) were on an episode of DiggNation last month where they talked about how Tiki Bar TV came about and why it was video rather than just a regular podcast. Worth a watch for those who remember Tiki Bar TV.

I never did I am not saying it's all trash, that's why I said I think I am the only one, because they are popular.

Maybe I wasn't clear, I wasn't accusing you either, just saying that I can totally understand why some people think it's all trash: because there actually is a lot of trash (and some of the most popular are trash). But there is so much to explore that no matter what's your passion, there's a lot to enjoy too.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of iTunes gaining support for podcasts, Apple has shared a new web page highlighting 20 podcasts that the company loves.

Apple-Podcasts-20.jpg

The podcasts are categorized by year: 2005-2010, 2011-2015, 2016-2020, and 2021-2025.

Featured podcasts include This American Life, Acquired, The Daily, and others.

Apple shared a letter to honor the occasion:The anniversary is technically in a few more days, as Apple released iTunes 4.9 with support for discovering, listening to, and subscribing to podcasts on June 28, 2005.

"Apple is taking Podcasting mainstream by building it right into iTunes," said Steve Jobs, in a press release shared that day. "Podcasting is the next generation of radio, and users can now subscribe to over 3,000 free Podcasts and have each new episode automatically delivered over the Internet to their computer and iPod."

You can still read our own Arnold Kim's coverage of the iTunes update that day. Time flies!

Podcasts emerged a few years before iTunes support came along. The word "podcast" is credited to journalist Ben Hammersley, who referred to "podcasting" in a 2004 article in The Guardian. The word is a portmanteau of "iPod" and "broadcast."

That graphic design is insane!
