On April 1, Apple celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades since Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne co-founded the company.

To mark the occasion, Apple shared a 40th anniversary video, flew a pirate flag at its Cupertino headquarters, held a beer bash, and launched an Apple Music playlist filled with songs that have been used in past Apple advertising spots.

Apple's playlist includes 40 tracks from a wide range of genres, featuring artists and bands from The Rolling Stones to Adele to Coldplay. Songs from Apple ads highlighting a number of products are included, like Paul McCartney's Dance Tonight, used in a well-known iPod commercial, and Alabama Shakes' Sound & Color, used in a recent iPad Pro commercial.

Apple's "Apple 40" anniversary playlist is available to all Apple Music subscribers and can be accessed under the "New" section under Hot Playlists. It can also be accessed through this link.

How about cutting down on don't care video's, radio stations, tv series and actually launch some products...

Too bad I have not signed up for Apple Music. It was nice when they allowed the radio feature on the free side of the pay wall. Now Apple is pushing me to look to other Music services to discover new music.

I wonder if Apple will ever offer one year of Apple Music for free when you purchase an iPhone/iPad. That would be great! Still, Spotify is a better choice at the moment. Makes you wonder why they didn't go after them instead of Beats.

Flying the pirate flag was a nice touch... too bad no one apparently thought to snap a picture, eh? That must be the case; otherwise I'm sure there would've been a photo posted with this story.

I really don't understand why MacRumors chose to devote 90% of this post to the Apple Music playlist - it's not like most of us can actually listen to it.

Beats1 isn't free anymore?

I agree it's nice that they had a free radio feature, but why should music be free? We pay for videos on Netflix etc. - Shouldn't be any different for music. (Unless of course that you opt to use an ad-supported service.)

I saw a picture here over the weekend. It wasn't as 'rustic' as the original, but it was pretty cool I'd imagine...

Ahh, simpler times...

I remember my pilgrimage to the Mothership, and being amazed, walking up and down De Anza Blvd, and Mariani Ave. Imagining the bar in the parking lot full of old style Apple employees. I walked past the building were Steve Jobs was exiled. Walking around Infinity Loop...

A perfect place for Pirates... Aye mateys...
[doublepost=1459901759][/doublepost]Is this list available outside of the pearly gates of Apple Music?

So, you were leaching off Apple by using their services for FREE... you won't pay Apple a dime.... and now you're 'threatening' Apple to go somewhere else. I don't get it. Apple should be happy for your move, not upset. You're now costing them less money.

This will always be my favorite Apple ad:
Absolutely. Such a great way to have revved up the company for the next stage, an unbelievable stage in its history.
[doublepost=1459904370][/doublepost]Apple has always been good at picking a hit song.

Lots of great songs here, but I think the one that is stuck in my head most firmly is new soul. It evokes the image of the envelope and the macbook air immediately.

I discovered some great music over the years thanks to Apple.
I have too. Too bad Apple didn't include any of that great, creative, previously-undiscovered music in their playlist. They only included songs that were already popular. It was a nice try, it's just unfortunate that Apple didn't actually include their best ad songs here.

What about this song? A classic.
Exodus Honey by Honeycut

And this. Not a classic, but good.
Chimes by Hudson Mohawke (from MacBook Air "Stickers" ad).

While I'm on the music topic, I'll just post the great songs for the first three Apple Watch ads (hard-to-find music).

Here are two great songs from Apple Watch videos/reveals, one of which is most likely made by Apple and cannot be found elsewhere.

Below, I have the Apple Watch Reveal Video then a 2 hour loop of the music.

Thanks. I added all the songs to my "Apple 40 (2)" playlist. Here.
Apple 40 (2)

You can add this playlist to play after the official Apple one.

BTW, I just found out that now you can add songs to your playlists but not My Music, which is great. Looks like Apple keep improving the app frequently. I like that.

Agreed. I think we have similar tastes because all of those songs I have downloaded. But most of all the Apple Watch Reveal music just AMAZED me when that was released

So, you were leaching off Apple by using their services for FREE... you won't pay Apple a dime.... and now you're 'threatening' Apple to go somewhere else. I don't get it. Apple should be happy for your move, not upset. You're now costing them less money.

I agree with everything you.... oh wait, no, you are totally off base here. Apple provided the radio service before they came out with Apple Music. It was something that was part of the ecosystem that we all paid into. Now Apple says -- since we have you in the ecosystem and we know you can't leave, well now we are going to charge for stuff you already paid into.

And even worse they shoot themselves in the foot. I have a library of 20k+ songs that I have legally purchased. In other words, money that Apple has collected. I used radio to discover new music to buy. Now I cannot discover because I am not interested in subscription based services and therefore have stopped buying new music. Trying to force me into a subscription based model is not good, and it is costing them (at least in my situation). Apple has totally abandoned those of us that still believe in owning versus renting (aka streaming).

Now if I go to Pandora or Spotify to discover, I will also find other places to purchase my music. Sure I will import it into iTunes so that I keep my library consolidated, but Apple is losing sales. I guess they are getting enough subscription revenue that they don't care and the huge drop off in music purchase seem to prove their total apathy for the ownership model.
