To wrap up, those of you who have smart phones, whattya use AND what do you think to probability that Apple will release a phone w/ smart phone capabilities?

Thanks

Coachingguy

If Apple were at some point going to add a smartphone capabilities into its iPhones, then I doubt it'd be in the first version. If they do this, they're jumping into the mobile phone making market for the first time, so it'd be way too big a leap to jump in with a phone that's the swiss army knife of the digital age. The goal is going to be take away mainstream phone sales from companies that are launching phone & music playing devices. Smartphone users, while high in number, are still not mainstream.

Maybe someday they'll have a range of phones and smartphone will be an option? Are you a Newton fan by any chance? :p

And my current "smartphone" is a Palm T|C and a Moto SLVR.

It's a phone, they all are the same. I have not been impressed with the hardware of a cell phone ever. But we know it wil be the iPod OS, it will be white, it will work with iTunes, and it will sync your contacts, etc. Oh, and I bet the corners will be rounded.

Unless it has more than: GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UTMS and is a world phone, has two cameras, a keyboard, an expansion slot, can play movies, and music, and can work with spreadsheets, word documents, has WIFI B/G and have bluetooth, they have not done anyhting that a couple of other companies have done. Take a Motorola POS and slap an Apple log on it, and put this rumor to sleep.

The only things Apple has over anyone else any more, is their OS. Their hardware is like everyone elses hardware.

P6

PS Lets not forget email and web access.

and if a smartphone it MUST include a full keypad, MUST, please ... a highend clone of a treo, love it.

gsm, umts, cdma & everything?

no more hotsync issues ...

can't wait.

Welcome to Macrumors, it is like this all the time. Some weeks are worse then others. You just get used to it!

I know it's like this but I really do believe there is no iPhone, still it is fun to spur on the stupid and ignorant, that's what I come here for ;)

I think it's more of the fact people want it so badly that they are willing believe anything to support their beliefs.

Even bigfoot, the loch ness monster and UFOs left photos, the iPhone has shown off absolutely nothing for nearly 12 months worth of rumors, therefore no iPhone.

I can see it now..... iPhoney, Tricked Different

Yes... The "Newton" will rise again damit!

If Apple were to release a new Newton I would buy in a second, the Newton was fanastic even though it was made a little before it's time.

I wouldn't be surprised if we seen a Newton-ish thing from Apple in the next few months.

There have been more persistent rumors than that that came true, big time.

What are the chances that the new "media device" that seems so certain on sept. 12 will be the iPhone? It would be nice to at least see this by MWSF in Jan. (also happens to be around the time my 2yr contract is up ;) )

I have a couple of Windows Mobile phones (Samsung i600 and i730). The i600 is nice and compact, but the simple UI makes it a "read-only" phone. The i730 with the full PPC touch screen interface is simply amazing. I wish that the i730 were smaller, but I end up carrying the extra bulk because it can do many things that my laptop can!

Have my email (Outlook), calendar (Outlook), address book (Outlook), maps (MS Streets), web (Internet Explorer) - with me, all the time. As well as several other Windows apps that have be adapted for the Windows phone APIs.

The i730 has EV-DO, so having 700 Kbps internet wherever I am (well, didn't work so well in Guam and Tahiti) is a killer app.

If Apple comes out with "Mobile OSX", then they'll have an interesting offering (even though they'll have a blatant ripoff of Microsoft's mobile innovations).

If they have a mutant "wanna-be" set of apps, then it's a "not very smart phone™".

Unless Apple makes it white plastic - that is so out of style now....

I love the Treo, and if Apple improved it.... waaaagh. :D

My wishlist:

4GB flash memory
iTunes
iChat Mobile
Full Address Book and iCal support
Mobile iWeb
.Mac support (iDisk etc. from anywhere)
Mail
Nice camera 2-3MP, some optical zoom
QWERTY thumboard
More cool stuff only Apple can think of.

I have a Nokia 9300. Things I would like to see in a Apple-phone:

- WLAN and BT
- Large screen for email and web
- Backlit Keyboard (not just the numeric-keypad, but the actual keyboard)
- Camera for videoconferencing
- Support videoconferencing with iChat-users
- Made from metal. Aluminium or stainless steel

From the 'Steve Jobs boasting' rumors earlier, it would seem to suggest that the iPhone is way better than anything out there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some form of pocket apps in a business version (a la PocketPC pda phones), with just itunes & other stuff in a standard consumer version.

Any thoughts on ipod accessory compatibility - like will the nike+ module just fit into the bottom of the iphone like it does on the nano?

While we are dreaming

Since we're just hoping and wishing....

It would be really cool if Apple could just skip the cell phone and go straight to satellite phone service.

I know that the major carriers can't do it because the bandwidth is not there for Verizon's 40 million, Cingular's 42 million, or Sprint's 38 million customers, plus the phones are still bulky with huge antennas.

But if the minturization lept forward just a little bit, I would love to have an Apple satellite smartphone with bluetooth connectivity, screw CDMA, TDMA, GSM and all the other 3 and 4 letter words.

What's the max internet speed off of satelite? 700 kbps?

Just dreaming :)

edit: nevermind, I forgot you prolly couldn't use it indoors anyway :(

I just hope that there'll be some kind of iPod hard drive integrated... I was toying with the idea of going for the new nokia with 4GB harddrive coz I'm fed up with carrying my mobile phone and iPod round... who knows- I'll probably get this phone when it comes out anyway.:)

That is true. If it were just a phone and he was trying to squeak into the market, he might not be boasting so much.

And wow that would be SO crazy awesome if the Nike thing did work with the phone. Good thought. I hope they do have some comptability...and imagine the form factor it would take, I would assume it might with at least earphones and chargers.

I've been reading through this thread and noticed how nearly everyone is focused on Apple entering the "cell phone" market. I can't believe how the majority of you actually feel that Apple will make a cell phone? And you're all going to ditch your RAZR when it comes out...

Apple is not going to, and will never, enter the cell phone market. They are designing a WiFi phone to compete with the new VoIP phones that are emerging: http://tools.netgear.com/skype/, http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/wireless/0,39020348,39187936,00.htm. Does the name "iChat Mobile" making anymore sense now?

You can quote me on that!

Prediction...

Here's my prediction for what it's worth:

I think Apple still sees the Mac as the digital hub so the iPhone (if it actually exists) will most likely get its songs by syncing with iTunes on your computer similar to how it works with iPods today except that it will happen wirelessly using Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR) [notice how many of Apple's current consumer-targeted computers sell with Bluetooth built in?] because it's simply too expensive with the current wireless regimes to do it any other way.

Specs:

- GSM Quad-band
- Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
- Java (games/productivity)
- Camera
- Unlocked (use it with any GSM provider)

Instead of being locked down and crippled the way Bluetooth is on many phones (as dictated by the wireless providers) you'll be able to sync your photos and songs (and easily turn them into ringtones) with your computer without paying costly data transfer charges.

I'm not going to speculate on what the interface will look like but it'll be way better than anything offered today.

I thought of this as well, the problem I see, it would work great if you wanted to call someone, but what if they wanted to call you. I guess voice mail, but ew.

I assume it would have an addition of a Skype/Gizmo Project style "in" number. So that way they do have the ability to call you when your mobile is on. Otherwise, yeah, it wouldn't be as nice an item...

"We view this as a positive for Apple as this indicates that the US market has some degree of market acceptance of converged cell phone-MP3 player and that a product of mediocre quality like the LG Chocolate phone can still do very well," he wrote.

ouch...thats harsh! this phone must be something else...I'll be the first one to have one

this thing sounds sweet! I want to see a picture!
