I think Ternus is the guy though we don't know much about Ternus' views about computing and the future.

From one of the articles linked above:

So he seems to be cut from the same mold as Cook - a slow‑but‑steady type - which is probably the most likely choice Cook himself would make. In other words, Ternus may be the one person Cook won’t lose any sleep over for the next ten to fifteen years.

That said, Apple today is more valuable than it has ever been, and I doubt Steve would regret his choice for a second. If Cook really does decide to oversee Apple’s board, investors will be happy - and, above all, he’s fully earned it.

Tim Cook is already a bad guy to many for moves he's been forced by circumstances to make. I'm convinced he doesn't want to leave his replacement in this position, which means he'll continue until the time comes to fall on his sword so the next person doesn't have to.

That's not so much an exact time frame as a situation.

Apple has done great on their financial results because of Tim. If I were him, I will not step down unless I have to. I will make sure Apple on top financial performance as before and better each future year! The strong financial result is the visible proof that Tim has succeeded on his decisions and customers have confidence on the company! Great job, Tim!

For anyone curious, the Tim Cook goodbye image above is not AI generated, and rather handwritten/handmade by our graphics artist @AngerDanger.
It should probably be noted as an illustration under the photo, not in a separate post in the thread. If you're faking an image, let your readers know.

It was the first thing I looked for when I saw that image, and nothing was there. It's incredibly disappointing that a site that seems to want to take its industry journalism seriously doesn't seem to have the same standards for its visuals.

Because when I see images faked, I start thinking "maybe they're making up quotes too." You guys can't have it both ways.

Tim's tour of duty includes the watch (successful), the Apple car (billions wasted), Home Pod speakers gen 1 are still great), Vison googles (sales flop and cost billions as well). Steve introduced the iPhone and iPad lines, the Mac towers and all the laptops were pre-Cook products.

Cook is the greatest bean counter and inventory manager, but seems to lack product visionary talents.

The extremely slow incremental upgrades with ever increasing prices has made Apple one of the most profitable companies with a huge improvement in value as folks shell out thousands to get marginal improvements.

I can say that as if one goes to the iPhone product page and do a compare of the last three year models of iPhone Pro Max, the number of paragraphs with the same wording far out numbers the few with changes.

Vision Pro was a success. Steve had his fair share of flops.

This can be debated.

Correct. Millions of repeat buyers buying on their schedule for their reasons. Whoda thunk? Must be the RDF kicking in.

Overall hundreds of changes including the software.

We would have far less choice, but things would work far better than we expected. We don't need so many iPhone, watch, and iPad choices. Build one or two and make them great. Build an iMac and a Mac mini. Make them great.
Is this the case? Like really?
Setting the timer back to 2011 and, Apple had seven different Mac models. Three different MacBook lines across four different screen sizes, the Mac mini, the iMac in two different sizes, and the Mac Pro, which hadn’t been touched in years.
Now there is two MacBooks across four screen sizes, one iMac screen size, Mac mini, Mac studio and Mac Pro. Literally the exact same amount of models, seven. And one less MacBook than before.
If anything, the Mac lineup today is the simplest It has been in 30 years.

And don’t even get me started on the iPod line during Steve’s time, anyone here remember when there was an iPod fourth generation, iPod photo, and iPod color all being sold at the same time, all different variations on the same fourth generation iPod, all at three different price points, all with pros and cons?
Or what about the iPod classic 5.5 that was kind of an upgrade, but also kind of wasn’t an upgrade…
The messy product lineups were a staple of Steve Jobs’ Apple in the 2000s.
The only reason people think of the four product matrix is because that was his plan when Apple was near bankruptcy and literally couldn’t afford to have messy lineups. Once they could, they did, and he pushed for it. That four product matrix turned into a seven product Mac lineup, five different iPods being sold at the same time, and if he had lived long enough, it’s very likely we would have seen the iPhone and iPad lines expand under his watch as well.
There’s even an email from 2010 where he talked about wanting to introduce both an “iPhone nano” and an “iPhone 4+” and by early 2011 he was on board for a mini iPad…

Apple is doomed has been a meme since 2011. It’s the best it’s ever been, objectively. How many years before its souls is permanently lost?
There’s no objective measurement of how good it is. There are many objective measurements, but no overall metric of Apple being the best could possibly be objective.

At least on this particular forum, “Apple is doomed” posting started as early as the launch of Mac OS X 10.0 in 2001.
Or, more infamously, the thread when the original iPod was introduced.
You can go read it, it’s hilarious. Basically the entire comment section other than a couple people lamenting how Steve had “lost his way” and everything along those lines.

I think you are absolutely correct.
Tim will likely step down when the political environment shows that it’s time for him to, rather that be very shortly after the 2026 midterms or very shortly after the 2028 election, one of the two.
That way, once the political environment is a little different, any moves Apple has made in the last several years could just be waived away as “Tim’s Apple, not mine”.
Meanwhile, Tim will literally still be the chairman of the board so, either way it’s Tim’s Apple. It’s just a new guy gets all of the good will and very little of the baggage.
