Compensation is supposed to be about the value that your work brings to the company, not the physical, mental, or emotional load that work puts on you. You can spend all day doing something that makes you truly happy and earn a large amount of money for it, or you can do something that makes you miserable and earn a small amount.
 
While college isn't a requirement nor guarantee of a successful career, it significantly increases the chances of it. It's not a coincidence that higher education levels correlate with higher income. Ellison, Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg, etc. are extreme anomalies and not the norm.

Well, based on my experience, I think a lot of people go to college for the wrong reasons and I think the way college's are advertised is horribly irresponsible.
