Apple today reported its earnings for the third fiscal quarter of 2025, and iPhone sales saw significant growth. iPhone revenue was at $44.6 billion, up 13 percent from $39.2 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Speaking to CNBC, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that iPhone revenue was up because the iPhone 16 turned out to be more popular with consumers than the iPhone 15 was during the same time period last year.

iPhone 16 sales increased "strong double digits" compared to the iPhone 15, and Cook said the iPhone 16 models were particularly popular with current iPhone users upgrading to a new model. Cook's statement covers the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, though he did not provide specific insight into which devices were the best sellers.

Apple also saw growth in Mac sales thanks to the M4 Mac lineup, but iPad sales and sales in the Wearables, Home and Accessories category were down.

Well yeah, I can’t tell you how many teenage girls I’ve seen with an iPhone 16

I can’t imagine why. It’s not like they deceptively advertised Apple Intelligence features prominently in all iPhone 16 marketing only to have to backtrack on them because of delays.

Not a teenage girl, and "Apple Intelligence" had nothing to do with my purchase, but I'm perfectly happy with my base model iPhone 16.

16 was a big upgrade from 15. Latest CPU (not year old one as in 15), 8gb ram, better camera, etc .
Frankly, its a great value for the base iphone (esp compared to prior years) making even the pro models a questionable upgrade.

The article wasn't about how satisfied people are with their iPhone 16.

It's actually a pretty dumb article though-- "Latest iPhone outsells old, last generation iPhone". Well, duh...When's the last time a car manufacturer said last years cars are outselling the new models?

It is quite understandable: In one hand, we have one of the biggest generational leaps, going from a mere A16+6GB of RAM on the iPhone 15, to an all Apple Intelligence capable A18+8GB of RAM. In the other hand, the fear to increased prices due to tariffs and inflation.

I think it’s understandable that the iPhone 16 did much better than the 15. I actually perceived it as the beginning of a new “super cycle” and people with an A18/M4 device, will likely hold on to it for many years.

Water is wet and the sky is blue.

I wonder what features they'll pump up and barely release this year to help juice sales?

Recent sales are up because of the looming tariffs, not because of the lack of promised features on an otherwise boring upgrade of a few minor features. The big CARROT was nonexistent and Apple knew it and lied about it. Many of we iPhone 16 buyers are more than ticked off for the deceptions. It now looks like Tim boxed himself into the corner with Indianand the tariffs will be more than his bonus...

Maybe the subservient Apple BoD will grow some strength and can the Skipper that ran the Apple ship aground resulting in the loss of key personnel in the area that was so special last summer they had to lie about. How great it (was? - might be? - could be?) is just BS.

Get a crew in there and clean the brown skid marks from the walls and wash a few mouths out with soap and we can try to continue....

My wife switched from 14PMx to a 16 Plus, and I gotta say it's a great phone that I often mistake it for my 15PMx when kept side by side on the table. I was actually looking forward to maybe switching to 17 Plus, but have no interest in the Air which it's replacing this year. Shame.

Yeah, the most popular in Europe… cause that’s the only phone you get for 1000€. Pro will have you throw away 1229. All for a phone designed by big bosses from Cupertino and assembled in Chinese and Indian sweatshops from mostly Chinese parts. “Big biznis” out here!
