This is so stupid. People are going to gravitate to news and information that confirms their biases. And with everyone having easy access to the internet and social media platforms it’s very easy to cultivate news feeds and become part of groups that tell you what you want to hear. There’s nothing congress or social media companies can do about people believing what they want to believe and coming to the conclusions the want to come to.

Exactly. This entire war on fake news by the “mainstream” media is more about who controls the narrative and distribution of information. Are there fringe trolls and “sources” out there making up stuff? Of course. We’re people turning to these “sources” before the last election. Absolutely. If the government and big media want people’s trust, earn it. Institutional distrust is not new, and is not a Trump, Obama, Republican, or Democrat creates problem.

Reports suggest 12 million for launch day alone
meanwhile Samsung S8 from April to August SHIPPED (not sold) 20 Million
Backlog for iPhone X is till December 14th

Now you can imagine who is selling more phones this year despite launching in November
Yep, and Samsung reps will be scrambling with their retail customers to balance inventory.

All true, doesn't mean that they envisioned there would be more at launch though. Apple knows a certain percentage of customers that see a "shipping in "X" weeks" notice equate to lost potential sales; not everyone will wait.

The caveat is that Facebook has a long history of claiming that it's not a media company in order to try and avoid responsibility for certain things.

What does Samsung have to do with this, except for their parts that are inside it.?.

Will be interesting to hear Cook’s take on tax reform. He’s very liberal in his political views, but has a fiduciary responsibility to his company to turn a profit. Those seem to be competing ideology’s.
Warren Buffet is a nice example of billionaire who still has very liberal economic views. Buffet believes he and other billionaires should be taxed more than the current 15% on their investments. Cook may be the same.

My opinion: Social responsibility and good business practices are not mutually exclusive. Treat the work force with respect and they will return in performance many fold.

I don't disagree with that. But the best way for a democracy to work is if the public and private sectors have a healthy set of checks and balances between them. There's way too much "what can the government do to help business owners" and not nearly enough "what can the government do to help the general public" these days. The public sector is not intended to be a servant of private interests.

I'm glad the media keeps doing stories about how the influence of Russia helped elect our idiot president to office. Though of course, said idiot president will call anything negative about him 'fake news'.
I fully believe that Russia attempted to interfere, and there's ample evidence now that the Trump campaign colluded. But I'm not so sure that's why Trump won the election.

Honestly, can we not go on and on about these social networks spreading fake news and influencing people and instead start talking about critical thinking skills?

It's almost as if the media and the establishment don't want people to have or need to think critically. Easier to control that way?
The problem is that people don't think critically. They will believe anything they see on Facebook and social media, particularly if it confirms their existing bias. I'm not sure if there's a solution, this is the world we live in now.

Tim is not as Left as you may think. Always be careful in assuming from the "Public Persona." He can be as ruthless, if not more so than SJ ever was. :apple:

Socially Liberal but fiscally Conservative, pretty common these days.
There's nothing self-contradictory about supporting the free market AND gay marriage.
I think you're in the wrong forum, lol! We're talking about taxes. You can't spend more money on social reform if you want to tax people and corporations less. It's dollar and cents, something Cook is probably pretty good at, so yes, this is a bit of a contradiction.

In the past, Cook has expressed a desire to see taxes lower to bring back money from overseas, so I don't think he's arguing for higher taxes in this interview. If he is, it's still contradictory and problematic as he isn't representing the best interest of the shareholders. So like I said, will be interesting to see his opinion.

Mr. Cook has, in the past, advocated simplifying our corporate tax policies in a revenue neutral way: Eliminating all corporate expenditures, lowering the corporate tax rate, and establishing a reasonable rate on foreign earnings.

(To my mind, a reasonable rate on foreign earnings - i.e., those that are legitimately foreign rather than made foreign through certain accounting tactics - would be 0%. We shouldn't tax them at all; many advanced economies don't. But that's not what Mr. Cook has advocated, just a lowered rate which would make it more feasible for such earnings to be repatriated.)

EDIT: I would add that, though it would of course depend on what the rate was lowered to, such changes may well result in more taxes being paid by Apple. Mr. Cook acknowledged as much, but still believed that such changes would be good policy (and perhaps still good for Apple).

At least under Trump we can see some changes happening in the Middle East best example is Saudi Arabia’s opening up to the world and changing their attitudes toward women and doing some major religious reforms something Bush or Obama never cared for.
