I said before - if Apple came out with a 'Pippin' now, either a scaled-down Mac or a seriously beefed-up Apple TV and went for a disc-free download-only game distribution model - and do it quickly - they could own a big chunk of the video games market. Easily.

Now I wonder if Nvidia/AMD will release drivers for the real graphics cards for OSX...

Two of the five company I admire most, are meeting for discussing something.... i'm thrilled. I love Apple, i love Valve.
:)

Well the problem is that the Apple TV is not powerful enough to run major games. It is only made to play videos and do simple user interactions and networking. Not to mention there would need to be some kind of controller other than an Apple remote. I don't think that this exact thing would be a possibility, but an Apple console would be very BA :D

Valve and Apple join forces to make a gaming console.
Hardware and OS design by Apple. Online integration and ecosystem by Valve.

Gabe Newell (director of Valve) on their upcoming gaming hardware:

"We'd rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do [hardware]. We think it's important enough that if that's what we end up having to do, then that's what we end up having to do."

One can dream.

Except Valve is hiring people so they can build it themselves?

Well, games are basically the only things I miss since I completely ditched Windows. Steam for Mac improved things considerably but there is still a lot which can be done. Most Mac games have significantly lower performance than on Windows, and some titles are not available at all or only through a Wine wrapper which I consider a workaround to a clean native implementation.

This is interesting because the whole idea of having a "smart tv" seems to be headed to consoles. Apple would not have any momentum in this arena though, but a partnership with Valve could help put them on the map--and Valve seems to be equally interested in moving into the living room lately.

Onlive.com

If people want to play great games on their Mac, why not just use Onlive? For $10 a month the playpack is a steal for over 150 games. Even if you only use the service to rent games occationally, its still a great service.

If Apple is making it I expect a game console that is overpriced and underpowered, unfortunately.

Of course, they might aim for a more casual, family friendly, market, which would mean going head to head against the Nintendo Wii U.

The next Playstation and Xbox would still be aimed at the more hardcore gaming market.

I'm just guessing.

Apple doesn't collaborate with anyone but content providers. They buy the rest.

The idea of Apple buying Valve is hilarious to me, but I know Gabe would never stand for it so it's not a possibility.

Apple TV set to include Steam. Gaming consoles become obsolete.:D
Most would actually argue its the other way. Theres less and less reasons to get a dedicated media box these days. If apple goes for gaming, the two will eventually basically turn into the same device.

The hardware is aging and in need of an update, true, but the 'next gen' would likely address that.

So a Sony?

Half Life

Tim is going to beg Valve to finally release the original Half Life for the Mac.

Valve will do it...but it will only work on Mac OS 9. :)
