From what I have heard about the projects they are working on, the toe that Apple has in the water has an ingrown toenail and a fungal infection. e.g. Planet of the Apps.

Cook ended the question by saying "With our toe in the water, we're learning a lot about the original content business and thinking of ways we could play in that."

Ok well you are testing the water I have purchased a new PC for the first time in 20 years. I have also received a FREE Apple TV with Direct Now which was a bit sketchy at the beginning but many of the issues seem to be worked out for me. With a free Apple TV and $35 a month for all the channels I have wanted for the past 7 years since we cut the cable. I don't need anything from apple other than the Free Apple TV they provided for me to watch other companies content. They seem to be going in the wrong direction with many of the things they are doing lately in my opinion. I waited close to a year for the new MacBook Pro and in the end didn't buy it.

That ship has sailed as far as I'm concerned. The current product roadmap indicates I'll be less invested in Apple technology in the future.

I hope Apple does something less like Netflix and more like Beats1: A single LIVE TV channel on the TV.
Give cord cutters a way to get a late night talk show, Saturday morning cartoons, news, sporting events, special events (like awards shows). Different things they usually miss out on. Just mindlessly put it on (none of that awkward, trying to find something to watch). Can watch and rewatch shows after airing. Imagine an HBO-quality channel, exclusive to Apple's devices.

Upsides
TV gets a USP when every device like it also has Netflix
Success won't be measured against Netflix
Apple gets another source of revenue from subscriptions
Apple gets to play with the interactive medium (eg. voting from device during American Idol type show)
Apple becomes a network with its own distribution when others won't play TV game.
Brings back some of the fun of appointment TV, water cooler talk.
Can use it to show Apple stuff (beats1, keynotes, Music Festival)
Channel helps sell Apple devices. Apple devices help sell channel.

*Insert comment about how Tim is ruining Apple and there is no innovation*

I am more of a *insert vaguely racist comment referring to Dr. Dre* sort of guy myself. I guess thankfully we are all different and have choices.

While Apple is dipping its toe, other companies like Amazone, Netflix, HBO are swimming successfully .

I guess timmy needs some swimming lessons.

I wanna watch some Apple-branded anime :D

Well, I've never heard of anyone watching Amazon and Netflix OC, and HBO shouldn't be surprising since it was their original business. Except I am surprised because HBO's shows are all trash.

Toe in the water??? Meanwhile Netflix has gone from a $4b to a $60b company, Amazon, Hulu, hell even CBS have rolled out ..... All the while, Eddy Cue is showing up an hour late, with his Hawaiian t shirts and sneakers, to meetings with TV execs.
But please tell us more about your toe in the water!
It is Eddy Cue !!
To celebrate a zillion years of missed content contracts, he's gonna have his own emojie & smiley channel on AppleTV: TeleCuebbies !!

Why don't I receive some Love from apple? As a designer / Developer I'm part of the Apple Business Model. Believe it or not but iOS Apps are not created on the iPhone.

Indeed Apple, where's the XCode/Swift Developer Kit for MS Surface ?

Toe in the water??? Meanwhile Netflix has gone from a $4b to a $60b company, Amazon, Hulu, hell even CBS have rolled out increasing slates of original web based TV shows, and Sony Vue, Sling, and others now have growing online cable TV packages. All the while, Eddy Cue is showing up an hour late, with his Hawaiian t shirts and sneakers, to meetings with TV execs.

I just recently got a new 32 inch LED Sharp Roku TV and I was stunned to see how slick the UI was. In fact, set up was smooth and I was able to use Netflix on a larger screen. Not only that, Roku has more channels than what Apple TV has to offer. It's incredible. Roku may not have the prettiest UI but it gets the job done nicely. Even the remote control set up works well without pretending to be a game controller and focusing on just television.

Need I say that Netflix kicks a$$? I've been thinking of adding Crunchy Roll so I can access more anime.

The ' toe in the water' attitude is the wrong approach by Tim and is far too late. They dipped their toes a long time ago with A-TV and hasn't gotten far with it. The execs need to stop screwing around, otherwise there needs to be a shakeup. Big time.

Yes, the competition and participation by other companies is getting larger, but also the user interface on AppleTV is the worst of the top 3... Arguably, Roku is the best... We own the cheapest 2016 Roku, (X3) a couple Firesticks, and 8 Apple TV... Which do we use the most???? The Roku or Firestick.....

I prefer Roku, because it's item searches are better, and the management of multiple devices is easier.... Apple just needs to step up it's game.

Things I'd like to see.... a better selection of apps, more free content applications... (not likely).... ...and make it... "Search Agnostic" across more providers... It's too limited right now. It only searches its own stuff.

Improve the background interface... The thing looks like my iPhone... It's "Butt-ugly", instead of running content in the background while I'm scrolling, or offering up suggestions based on my history..(and do it cross-application)

Why can't I stream my books on my TVs??? Yes, I can send them from my computer to a TV... but why not access them directly on the TV???? Bad defect...

Why can't I globally standardize my Apple TVs from one computer application, so everything is in the same place on all the Apple TV units..., and the same apps on all devices????

Steal some ideas from Firestick and Roku....I've owned Apple TV since the big flat silver 160gig units, and currently have 8 hockey pucks that seem only to get firmware updates, but no interface improvement.

I prefer our Roku, and Firestick even though I own lots of content.

I disagree with you on this. I have used roku. And I hated the UI..felt slow and clunky.

8 Apple TVs plus Rokus? Thats an unhealthy amount of TV!

Could be interesting if they do it right.

Personally I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and some people search for a negative in everything, but it must be a miserable existence.

I assume those who are whining about all this, despite knowing almost nothing about it, will not watch any of these shows even if they turn out to be critically acclaimed masterpieces. They'll probably spin it into a negative about how the iPhone should have longer battery life instead :D

As long as my $9.99/month Apple Music subscription doesn't increase for TV content that I couldn't care less about, them I'm ok with this.

Apple has never been one to be first to any party. The are conservative their see what the risk takers are doing and where the market is heading and then walk into the party. Their refer to this as "innovation" in Apple's terms it means we will do it better in the "Apple Way." What their are looking for is to learn from all the mistakes other companies have made and then adopt something that maybe viable with the general consumer market.

Apple also believes that just because their are "Apple" the industry will bend to their terms and agreements. This may have happened for music and iTunes under Steve Jobs, I do not see this occurring again under Tim Cook for video content, hence all the delays for this so called "Apple TV". Interesting times nonetheless for Apple.

Toe in the water...hmm that doesn't sound very courageous.

Courage has nothing to do with it, Apple is looking to expand its "Services" category. It has to in order to maintain profits. The iPhone will only carry it so far, right now Apple has majority of its eggs in the iPhone basket. As an investor that is some high risk odds that Tim Cook and Co is playing with. A single failed iPhone release could reflect negatively on Apple within quarters.

I only have a 4th Gen ATV and 1 3rd Gen ATV so didn't even try to do this, but I can't believe this isn't possible. Apple is in the midst of pure classic group think right now, and almost every department seems to be clueless about the state of the industries that they're in. Like deer in headlights. They really need to shake up management, including Cook, but that won't happen until they are seriously hurting. Especially not after another record quarter of earnings, but the warning signs are there, and Apple better pay attention or those deer in headlights are going to be roadkill sooner rather than later.

I wish they had at least a toe in Apple's core products... Seriously! Am I the only one that thinks they are biting off far more than they can chew? After every update I think to myself "what awesome feature(s) did they remove?"
And the last several updates have NOT fixed my safari issues... Apple is rotting!

SPOT ON... most don't realize this, but you are 100% correct...a lot of momentum and too much cash, and not in touch with the consumers...ask Hillary about this.
