Generally, how long after a new iPhone model is released before the previous generation is available as a certified refurbished model from Apple?

I want to get a 16 Pro. I'd prefer brand new but, currently, leftover brand new 16 Pros only seem to be available from carriers and come with strings attached. I want to buy outright, unlocked. So I've been waiting for Apple certified refurbished.

Yes, I am aware of refurbished from other sellers such as Amazon or Backmarket. No thanks. I am only interested in genuine brand new or Apple certified refurbished.

Gotta admit, I am getting impatient. I really don't care for the 17 Pro but I may have to end up going that direction.

They’ll likely be available when the 18 Pro models are released, or around that time so if you want it now, you’ll have to find another way.

Apple refurbished 16 Pro's will be available before the release of the 18 Pro. I would have thought refurbished 16P's would be on Apple's site by now, so it's a bit odd. Especially since the refurbished 15P's have been on there for awhile.

Refurbished variants of the 15 and 14 Pro series became available on the Apple Store in May of last and the year prior, so I’d assume the same should apply to the 16 Pro.

In the UK Apple were selling certified refurbished iPhone 13 Pro Max when the iPhone 14 Pro Max was still the latest device. I know because I bought one from Apple in Watford shopping center. Stateside they seem to be two generations behind from what I recall.

Don’t you have online electronics market sellers? In EU there are plenty selling unlocked 16pro and 17pro with 15% discounts already.
Which is the same apple gives on the refurbs

The only way to purchase a NEW iPhone 16 Pro here in the U.S. right now is to go through a mobile carrier (Verizon, AT&T, etc.). No thanks!

There are retailers who are selling refurbished iPhone 16 Pro models but they are NOT Apple certified refurbs. Meaning, they cannot be covered by Apple Care.

Apple's certified refurb models receive a brand new outer case, a brand new battery, and brand new accessories (cable). For all intents and purposes, Apple certified refurbs are 99.9% new phones.

Other companies simply make sure a used phone is in good condition and sell them at various price points (depending on condition) as refurbished.

My local Apple store confirmed that they have iPhone 16 Pro models in stock in the backroom, but those are for warranty replacements. They will not sell me one (which I find ridiculous).

I guess I'll wait until May.
