The most I can get for my 2021 M1 Max MBP 16” fully loaded, even with 8TB SSD is apparently $1445.

Imagine you were the kind of person looking for a (refurbished )MB willing to spend $2000-3000 (which where yours would need to sit when bought at $1445).

You got options, a new base model MBP or specced up Air. Plenty of M2s in various configs only a little bit worse than yours.
And then you realize that the M1 cores are 4 years old and that even an M3 MBA will beat the M1Max in many tasks.

So yes for the level of refurbing Apple does thats the maximum they can pay to still make a profit.

If it is in good condition and does not the full Apple treatment you can sell it elsewhere for more.

I would like to know how this is decided, I see the conversation:
- Nahh, for the 14Pro Max is too little, let's give them $10 more.
- Yeah, makes sense.

I would never trade-in at those low prices. I doubt they give much for upgrade RAM/SSD. I usually just hand my "old" Apple devices down to the family or give them to friends.
Their prices are usually the same for base model vs top end upgraded version. I just buy used base model, trade in through my provider at apple and get full bill credits. Then sell my old device with upgraded storage through swappa or marketplace.

Very minor change in price. Better to sell somewhere else and get much better prices for old phones/devices.

Apple Trade-In has going for it the only thing iCloud does: convenience. Just like iCloud there are better ways out there, but because of convenience people choose it. That's what I did when I traded in my 13 Pro Max, I did it for the convenience of it, but I could have probably gotten $150 more for it on the street.

Just out of curiosity, did you hand the phone over in person? The trade-in subcontractor was incredibly incompetent and there was not much Apple would do about it for a long time. They even sent me a free HomePod Mini they admitted it was such a screwup. It was the opposite of convenient, I may as well have driven to the nearest Apple store, which is exactly what one of the many Apple reps I had to speak with told me I should have done.

My process was quite smooth. I did not hand it over in person, I received my new phone and a "return kit" and they said I had 14 days to ship it back. The return kit was very straightforward and 14 days was more than enough to transfer everything from one phone to the other.

And btw, you don't have to pay for anything, everything is prepaid. Also, your trade-in is included outright without even sending back the new phone, they grant you the discount right away and wait for you to send back the old phone to charge your card.

Yep that's how it's supposed to work. Except when the drone at the trade-in center says the phone won't activate, and sends you a picture of trying to activate it over cellular and not using the wifi connection.

It was only finally resolved when I refused the trade in and they couldn't find the phone. Completely ridiculous. Pretty sure the trade in center was just running a scam and someone just stole it.

For the record I've done AppleCare express device trade in a couple of times and that always went smoothly. Last time when the phone was on its way back, FedEx sent a notification saying the package had been destroyed. Uh...OK. But, I called Apple and they said they'd talk to FedEx and the next day I got an email from Apple saying my return was complete.

Definitely doing it in person next time.

Does anyone remember the full trade in price with tax on Apple website if you were to trade in the iPhone 14 128gb for the 15 128gb?
Also full price if you were to trade in the 14 Pro 128gb for 15 Pro 128gb?
I just want to see the difference
