A few thoughts...

  • I think a nice upgrade would be for Apple to use anti-reflective glass
  • From my understanding the point of Retina is to not have visible pixels - I can't see them changing the resolution much. It would be hard for them to manufactor the panels
  • I could see OLED panel being used - which would greatly decrease the thickness of the ACD

I currently have a 24" ACD and I would like to upgrade, but because of the above, I'm trying to hold off.

No glass would be best. Any layer between the eye and the image creates distractions and affects color and particularly contrast.

Apple could diversify: a glossy model for those who like it, and a matte screen without glass for those who need it.

I read somewhere (possibly MacRumors) that it's rumored Apple is looking into this non-reflectant glass product for upcoming Macs. The glass is nice as it doesn't scratch like normal anti-glare panels and doesn't have the mild distortion that accompanies AG panels.

Interesting sample, and looks much better than the mirror glass.

I'd still prefer no glass, just like the MBP.

The 23" Aluminium ACD's have yellow tint issues.

The 30" ACD is a great monitor...working on the 24" Glossy, I would get constant headaches and color issues. The glass makes the blacks darker and since I do graphic work, it would create discrepancies for my work and I had to find out workarounds for it. The 30" ACD is still my favorite Apple monitor.

my 23" had pink hue in the bottom so sold it off and got a mint 30" for 650 and a brand new dual dvi adaptor. couldn't be happier!

So alternatives, well Samsung S27A850D is 2/3rds of the price and 2/3rd of the weight.
I hate to nitpick, but the resolution of the S27A850D is 1920 x 1080. Monitors with a 2560 x 1400 resolution are still priced near the $999.00 range regardless of the manufacturer. The S27A850D is a nice monitor but it's not a direct competitor to the ACD / TBD. I'd go for it if I didn't need so much screen estate.

Um - like they offer on the 15" MBP? They obviously know there's a market for both.

I hope so. I mean, they've had this for framing artwork for years.
