I'll start by saying I am completely new to TVs/Displays/Monitors etc. Can a computer display like Apple's cinema display be used as a TV somehow? What is the difference between a television and a computer display? Feel free to direct me to a link.

I didnt have time to read the linked article but as someone who works on HDTV chips for a living I wouldent suggest using a HDTV as a full time monitor.
Its ok for watching movies and stuff like that but for actual work the pixel density on a LCD monitor is vastly higher and applications are designed around this density and look poor even on a 1080P display.
