I noticed that the new Apple cinema has a few firewire ports.... Could this solve the problem with using a new macbook that lacks firewire ports? Can I plug in my video camera to my apple cinema rather than my macbook somehow?

No because you need firewire on the laptop itself. In other words, there's no way to pass that back through to the machine.

My apologies. When the OP talked about the "new Apple cinema" I thought he meant the new Apple Cinema.

That sounds reasonable to me! (I didn't even notice he used the word 'new')
