Apple marketing does it again, to much stock means you're not planning to your customer.

Not having enough stock makes "incredible demand" headlines, drumming up excitement for more sales.

But they end up selling millions of units. Did you ever think that high demand means, you know, high demand? With all those long lines at the stores, do you think it's all just marketing spin?

It's probably because the greek god that makes the monster procs in these things took the day off.

The line at the AT&T store in my small town of 30,000 was nearly 60 people long at 8 am. They sold out in minutes as the employees said they only had space grey and 20 phone of each capacity. Glad I got there early!

When stores are receiving exactly 0 units to sell, demand isn't "incredible" but supply could be considered "incredulous".

I called at&t yesterday and asked if they were getting any 64gbs. They said they were only getting silver. I stayed up last night to get the gold but sold out with october availability. Went to at&t this morning to get a silver instead but the confused the grey with silver so only had grey. There were about 20 people when I went at 8 and sold out of 16gbs after an hour or so (went back home first then went back to at&t and waited in line) Looks like i'll be ordering a gold again tonight lol

Of course they have high demand. The issue is they have very low supply to go around. I have a feeling the actual amount of devices sold (I shouldn't say sold, rather the first wave of shipments) is very low.

Isn't this or a variant the same quote they use at every launch - true or not - it just sounds tired by now.

Demand seems quite strong...I went to the Apple Store at Boca Raton Mall here in Florida, and when I arrived at 8:10am, there were already 300-400 ppl in line. Luckily, there's an AT&T corporate store right across from it, and the line there was only 20-25 ppl.

Neither store had much stock of Grey/White, or Gold as I was told, and neither had 16GB devices in abundance, in any instance. In fact, the AT&T Store had NO 16GB devices and no Gold or Slate, just black 32GB or black 64GB. They weren't expecting any other colors for at least a week.

Since I wanted a 32GB black, I was in and out in just over an hour. :D

'Incredible' demand could mean anything really...

Very true. I think what is "incredible" is that there has been incredibly limited stock around the world. And as many predicted, they are playing off of this for PR purposes.

Don't get me wrong, I was fortunate enough to order an iPhone 5S this morning with 1-3 day shipping, and am looking forward to getting mine. But it definitely looks like most people in the world have not been so lucky online or in person.

I think the news here is that there is currently so little supply, not that the demand is so high. Nowhere in the world was there immediate availability online, and there are lots of reports of very small stock (or even no stock for some models) in person.

According to carriers, supplies of iPhone 5s were very constrained anyway.. which pissed them off somewhat...

I'm sure Apple will sell out of whatever supplies there are. iPhone still remains very popular :)

You have to cancel the online order to get your upgrade back, which can take some time. If you buy in the store again today, you will pay full price.

Takes about 10 minutes for the upgrade to be available once you cancel the online order.... just did that very thing

The AT&T Store I went to had only 40 black 5s models (and all colors of 5C in unspecified amounts). No white or gold 5S :-(
I got it in black (didn't care too much about the color, just wanted the 64GB one - but the gold was on my mind as an option, but I wanted to see it in person before deciding - guess AT&T/Apple decided that I get black, which I am fine with) - when I got there half an hour before opening the line was < 10 people (but it was one of the tiny AT&T stores where low stock and little choice was to be expected)

Guess Apple was expecting people to go crazy for the cheaper colored iPhones and not so much for the gold ones ....

Same here. No one actually thought to tell those in line that they only had the Black phones in stock, but I mentioned they had no white or gold ones after I got out and about 5 people immediately walked out of line. Pretty funny.

if they announce on monday that they sold 6-8million units, will you still complain?
What number is acceptable for you guys?

This morning there were some 150 people in line around 7:30a. The gold were basically out after first five people, then silver out after next 20. They did have a lot of space gray. They also ran out of T-Mobile unlocked version very soon.

Just came from the Mall and no one has the gold. lol..Glad I have my 5. I'll keep checking to add to this demand.

i love this time of yr, every year

i was able to get an iPhone 5, 64GB running iOS 6.1.2 (jailbreak) w/ 2 cases, 2 cables, and a charger for $528 in near-mint condition

28th in line this morning at verizon. all they had left was space grey. 5 verizon stores later no silver either.. Nice supply apple

I went in to a strip mall location at 7:50. First in line. No one at Sprint at all, 2 people at Verizon. Had no problem getting anything I wanted, and would not have had a problem at ANY of the dealers there.

There is no shortage here.... or maybe there is just no demand. I sure did not see any lines when I got mine.

I'm not telling it's not true, but I won't believe any "incredible" from Apple anymore. Abused word from them

Just like "elegant" is a fanboi's favorite work (that has no meaning any more...)

Kuo prediction came true then... He said its because the low yield of the fingerprint sensors.

Come on apple, lots people eager with this phone

^This.

The fingerprint sensor took longer than expected to perfect and manufacturing started later with lower yields. That's why the number of available phones seems low.

And don't forget that there are now an extra 1.4 BILLION (potential) customers at launch day with the inclusion of China.

It's not a conpiracy and Apple will catch up in time for the holiday season and sell the holy mess out of these things.

I think the carriers always say they didn't have enough. I wonder how much of the supply constrainst is due to worldwide availibility on the same day.
