kinda ******** pay for a "job" that's not even minimum wage at 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year (no taxes, bonuses, benefits)

Most likely the developers have a 2nd job and treat this as a hobby, but is that really a job?

Except almost no developers make your fictitious average. Some make a lot more (way over $100/hr in consulting fees). Most make a lot less (but still a bit more than zero).

I didn't make the average

Previouly, Apple has said app devs made $20 billion in sales in 2016. With this new info about 1,530,000 app developer jobs created due to Apple, that is $13,071.89 per dev per year in average. LMAO

The (estimated) 1,530,000 aren't all app developer jobs. Indeed, most of them aren't.

Based on previous versions of the report, there are 600,000 or so jobs which would be classified as "'core' app economy jobs."

  • An IT-related job that uses App Economy skills—the ability to develop, maintain, or support mobile applications. We will call this a “core” app economy job. Core app economy jobs include app developers; software engineers whose work requires knowledge of mobile applications; security engineers who help keep mobile apps safe from being hacked; and help desk workers who support use of mobile apps.

Also, there's crossover between the iOS and Android platforms when it comes to the estimating of jobs in the report - many jobs are counted for both platforms. So those developers also make money from Android. Further, there are other ways in which the employers of some of those developers / software engineers / security engineers / help desk workers generate revenue with which to pay them. A lot of apps are there to support what the businesses do in general, not to create revenue by being sold through the App Store - e.g., bank apps, content delivery apps, enterprise apps.

Here's the latest version of the report Apple gets the 1,530,000 from.

...Source?

I've got an entire floor of here at work with developers creating/updating apps for iOS and tvOS.

Any company that has an app has developers...
1) 16 billions AppStore profit, divided by 1.53 million jobs equals to an average of 10547 dollars per developer.
And that's over a 8-9 years period, starting 2008. It means less than 1500 dollar per year. this might be a job, but if they earn ONLY that then I seriously hope they have another one.

2) Did it ever occured to you that most companies didn't have developers but paid contractors for that kind of job?

This is a lie using statistics. No developer makes the average amount. It's a hocky-stick/power-law distribution, where almost everybody makes either a lot more or a lot less than any useless average value.

Some developers make a lot more (a good software engineer salary or more). A few developers make a small fortune. Most app developers make a lot less (pays for the dev account plus maybe a small percentage of iOS devices and Macs, if lucky).

Does it qualify as a job if it's below minimum wage?

Obviously the Apple Reality Distortion Field has received more attention & innovation than the iPhone itself. At this point Apple probably believes their own BS and has lost touch with reality. Typical...Happens to the best of them ....Microsoft, Blackberry, Nokia etc.
