Its not ‘glue’ holding the screen on on newer models, its just a sticky tape, and its fairly easy to remove and do hard drive upgrades, etc. - with the right tools (courtesy of ifixit).

I’ve done a few upgrades on 2013-2019 iMacs.
Actually easier than the ones with the magnets and the screws imo, since the magnets made it fairly difficult to get the screws back in.

Also, the older models had 4 wires connecting the screen to the mother board, the newer ‘taped on’ screen iMacs have only two wires.

iFixit is your friend. Look at upgrade instructions on their site before you spread disinformation.

Yeah I know all that but it’s still not as fast and easy as screws. Plus you have to use a special cutting wheel to cut the tape, then along new tape up and apply then try and line the screen up.

Is not it a bit early?

The vendors who make the components that go in the device do not make them forever.

This is standard across any computing device. Beyond 5 years you start paying a lot more for same-model components that went out of production long ago.

Compatible replacement CPUs, GPUs, etc. are no longer produced. Developer support is likely no longer maintained by the original vendor.

Disagree. The screws, with the way the magnets pull them away from their holes when you’re trying to put them back in make it a bit if a pain. IMO - that is more difficult than just re-applying new tape and laying the screen back into place. Plus with the older models it could be a struggle to insure no spots or dust gets between the screen and the glass overlay.

All I’m saying is I’ve done both kinds a few times each and find the taped models easier to deal with. YMMV

Oh yeah I almost forgot, it was an explosive product.

Which almost never happened of course.

And those million of of 2015 MBP owners who still use our laptops, guess what? - We now have a brand new batteries in our machines with no cycles on them ... for free!

So we have the best apple laptop model, AND we all have fresh batteries installed. I’ll take that deal any day.

The only point I’d agree with is the dust behind the glass. But I’m yet to tackle a screen with sticky tape.
What do you mean by YMMV?

I don’t like how the PSU is fully exposed though, that’s just extra stress having to keep away from it. The iMac Pro doesn’t have this ad it has an enclosed one, they should do the same with all the other iMacs.

YMMV = your mileage may vary

simply put, means whats good/easy/doable etc. for one person may not be for another

Whatever makes you sleep at night. “Best”. My Toyota is also better than my friends Ferrari. ;)

According to the ARK, Intel discontinued the Core i7-4771 in my Late 2013 iMac on 7/14/2017, so I expect that even after two additional years, Apple cannot/should not be expected to have CPUs, motherboards, just sitting somewhere in a warehouse. No one is still under AppleCare for that product and no lease machines are still under warranty.

No one complains about Dell or HP when they obsolete their PCs, but if Apple does, the wailers seemingly go into overdrive.

it's all about churn & burn. Churn & burn. That's why buying a high end loaded config of any of their products is such a poor investment. (looking at you MacBook Pro, IMac Pro, new Mac Pro)

I stopped buying high-end DSLR cameras for this reason.

My mid-2012 non retina 13” MacBook Pro was sold until October 2016. This means support until October 2021, so at least one more version of macOS after Catalina?

I bought it right when it came out. Lucky move.

Geez, Not sure why the snippy response.
Enjoy your laptop with the dongles and the broken keyboard.

Snip for tat

P.S. To suggest the 2015 is a toyota and the current mbp is a ‘ferrari’ in comparison is so laughable, you pretty much discredited yourself right there

Still using a 2010 iMac as my main machine. Low Sierra and some upgrades make this thing run great. If I need repairs done, I will do them myself.

Pretty much. I'm on a 2011.5 21.5" with High Sierra and just upgraded the HD to an external Samsung T5 1TB SSD and it runs great now. Maxed out the RAM awhile ago, too, at 32GB 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. No issues running PS working with RAW images at all... outside of the Retina screen there just hasn't been a worthy enough reason to upgrade.

Stepping back for a second, whats funny about our exchange it that it kind of sums up the world of Apple these days: Two fans of Apple arguing over who has the ‘least flawed’ product. :(
And this is why exactly I don't defend Apple when they're wrong. Both products are flawed.

The 2012 Mac Pro can't run Windows 10 either, FWIW. AMD never supported pre-GCN cards on Windows 10, so it lost new OS support in 2015.

My 2007 Mac Pro runs Windows 10 just fine, with a Radeon HD 5770. I had to convert the iso to boot in EFI32 mode, and run the Boot Camp drivers as administrator, but I'm running a full 64-bit version of Windows 10 on this old machine with all drivers installed. I don't see why the 2012 couldn't run it as well (if not better).

Excellent News, to be honest products should be immediately classified as obsolete as soon as a newer model comes out. Why would people even want to have an old ugly product instead of having the latest and greatest every year!

I do fully agree with you. The people, who don't have always the latest and greatest or cannot buy these every year, should be banned from this consumer oriented world. Because they inhibit shareholder earnings.
