How are the long island stores still open for tomorrow. I live on long island and the hurricane is supposed to make landfall right over the island. The eye is supposed to move right over long island.

Long Islander here too. :)

By the time tropical storm to Hurricane force winds begin, it will be evening. They would be closed by then anyway.

BTW, charge those batts in all your Apple gear. Power will probably be out for a few days to a week.

A lot of us New York posters will be offlline a few days I'm sure. Last time we had a hurricane was Gloria in '85. I was a kid back then (dating myself, I know). Was living in North Shore Suffolk County and we were out of power for a week.

Hopefully things (repair crews) have improved since then and power will be restored in 2-3 days.

Anyway, lots of places closing up in Manhasset, NY. So no surprise that the Apple Store will be closing up early, which is right next to the Americana Mall. No power, no sales.

My parents were supposed to take me home from the hospital then but then it was decided that might not be the best idea ;)
They said they lost electric from a week too, not fun

Kinda weird to think there'd be a hurricane in NYC

And that we'd feel the effects of an earthquake 5 days prior. Perhaps someone isn't too happy about Steve Jobs resigning? :)

Seriously, though, the subway is shutting down at noon tomorrow. This is a responsible move by Apple. Broadway is shutting down, even grocery stores are closing early tomorrow. Since most New Yorkers don't have cars, once the subway and buses stop running, there is no way for any of us to get anywhere outside of walking distance.

Hopefully this storm isn't as bad as feared, but it is supposed to make it here by tomorrow evening. It's better that everyone is in a safe location at that time than trying to figure out how to get home in the middle of a bad storm.

b) The Storm Surge may occur at the height of the high tide that occurs with the new moon. Which means that the potential for flooding in low lying areas is greatly enhanced, and that there is a greater chance (but not certainty, at this point) that Sea Walls that protect low-lying areas of Manhattan may be topped.

This is the biggest risk to NYC. I remembered my grammar school lessons about "Neap Tide" when I saw that Sunday is new moon, and the hurricane is supposed to reach here ... Sunday morning at high tide..

By closing the store it reduces sales obviously because they aren't selling when the store is closed therefore reducing profits therefore falling out of the most valuable company position.

After reviewing several posts you have made in other threads and observing an unfortunate pattern of skewed points of view and bad decision making, I have come to the disappointing conclusion that you actually believe what you are posting here.

In response, I have to point out that through the other 300+ worldwide retail stores, the online apple store entity, iTunes and the App store.. Apples steady stream of income may just squeak out a profit and survive the 1-2 days of 3-5 stores closing as a precaution. In fact, avoiding the potential of paying out health and life insurance policies for employees injured BY FALLING GLASS and the possibility of customers being injured in the process and trying to SUE Apple might just eclipse the need to sell a few Macbooks. Not to mention the loss of product in the potential failing of a glass roof that was possibly not constructed with a potential Category 2 Hurricane slamming into it. I'd like to think that Steve might have agreed with this choice, he seems like a classy guy and this is a classy and responsible decision. Perhaps a little bit of Steve rubbed off on a few people while he was around eh?

Please, come in here and tell us "I wasn't being serious, jeez." I think we'd all feel better about the times we are in if you did ;-)

Just took this photo from the Chelsea store (W 14th St)

Right before the rain started. They have battened down the hatches. Here we go, NYC!

OK, those sandbags.... probably a good idea. Those plastic sheets.... Probably going to last less than 1/2 hour once the wind gets strong enough to push rain through the seams (between the window and the door) that the plastic seems to be covering. Personally, I would have used the duct-tape directly on the seams, and left the plastic at home. Duct-tape will live through anything..... Best wishes to NY and the rest of the seaboard.

this will be a test of their utopian glass house in CA. if that store crumbles, they have serious re-thinking to do.
Um...California doesn't usually get hurricanes. If there's no stuff likely to come flying at CA glass houses, why should they re-think?

And it seems that the glass front of the store in the Upper West Side survived the earthquake--which California does get. So far, so good.

UWS Apple Store

Not sure what this is going to accomplish: the Apple Store, which is made entirely of glass, has sandbagged and draped their doors, and nothing else....

They are getting ready for the most likely possibility: that there will be minor flooding and wind-driven rain. So they are guarding against the possibility that water will seep in though the cracks around the doors.

That glass is much stronger than you might think. 100 mph winds will not break it. Something driven by 100 mph winds could break or crack the glass if it hits at the right angle, etc., but that is unlikely.

I guess you were never in a hurricane, huh? Watch the wind grab a small metal object and break the glass no problem... and then if enough wind goes into the store and builds up, and has nowhere to go, pop goes the roof.

Today is my birthday. I'm having a party at Le Bernardin near the Central Park. Free drinks will be served. Come join the party starting at 10PM until 3AM. At the end, free metro cards will be issued to all our guests to ensure safe return to their homes. I promise we'll have a blast!! :):)

Ok, I'm at Grand Central right now, still waiting for my train. It's been over an hour already.

Holy Cow.... if I was a photographer anywhere near Grand Central, I'd be over there and begging/bribing the police to let me in. I'd sneak in, if I had to. Do you know how hard it is to get photos of that place when it's empty? Movies pay $$Huge$$ $$Bucks$$ to get just minutes in an empty station. And now you could get hours of time, if you can convince the cop to let you in. Wow.

Thanks for posting the photo!
