It’s not just for TSA, I think you can use it to prove your citizenship if you’re pulled off the street by ICE too. Honestly the peace of mind this will bring is more than helpful, especially in cities that are subject to intense federal scrutiny right now. No one likes to carry their physical passport around with them everywhere they go. This alone should be the selling point.

It'll be interesting to see how Apple "helps" their customers understand just how limited the usefulness of the wallet passport feature will be.

Can you imagine how angry people will be when they arrive at the airport for international travel without their physical passport and are told they can't board.

The idea that they may let me go sooner is not going to make me any more comfortable with the idea of getting stopped and asked the equivalent of "papers, please," while just out and about in the first place.

Interesting that Apple are saying in the article's provided screenshot "Digital ID is ready to use for age and identity verification in apps, [and] online," when one considers that the push in multiple five-eyes countries (US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand make up the five eyes) to begin implimention of age verification widely on social media, websearches, AI, and more.

One can see a day in the future that the entire non-kid web (including social media) might well be locked behind ID verification.

Good or bad, not my place to say. I just find that interesting when one looks at the greater picture.

It’s likely more then you would think.

No one ever tries it.
hers's the list from a previous MR article, the word "select" is used twice ...

Apple Wallet app IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints within select U.S. airports:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
  • Billings Logan International Airport (BIL)
  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)
  • Great Falls International Airport (GTF)
  • Missoula International Airport (MSO)

A Passport is a Federal / National form of ID and proof of citizenship regardless if one travels or not, as mentioned above this helps speed up digital ID adoption, despite how slow things move, there will be a future where digital ID's will be accepted universally, it has to start somewhere.

Current biometric passports around the world already allow self checkouts / check-ins at some points of entry, etc.
Sounds like a great way to track people even more and capture political dissidents. Considering the way the US government is currently trying to silence political dissidents, that’s a nightmare waiting to happen

Let’s push back now

Oh, it’s obviously very bad. Age verification is a Trojan horse to control the internet and limit the flow of information the rich and powerful don’t want people to see

I don’t like the ease that this makes it for websites to check ID. Eventually every web signup will ask to see your ID to confirm your identity.

I totally agree.

We are bordering on needing a new/different internet honestly.

The whole bloody thing is turning into cable TV for your computer(s)

You need a Real ID issued by the state you reside in to travel between states. You can use your passport as well but it's not required to travel within the US.
Um, no. Right now, you only need a Real ID for commercial air travel. It is not required for interstate travel by car, train, or boat. Oy...

Do you need your passport to travel between states ? U.S. regular ID’s is not enough ?
Yes, I fly with it exclusively. A Real ID is required to fly, and a passport is easier to get than the stupid star on your drivers license. I even showed up to get mine with my passport and they wouldn’t accept my documentation. So my drivers license is staying “fake” forever.

Ideally passports would be based on biometrics similar to Apple's FaceID and / or TouchID. You wouldn't need to carry anything, there's no passport to lose or get stolen, and this would be way more secure than a non-standard paper document with watermarks that skilled people can forge. It's also more accurate than a customs human manually looking at your face and comparing it to a tiny picture on a passport. People will scream about privacy but when you get a passport they take and digitize your photo and fingerprints so the government already has your personal data.
