Who is complaining about this?

I can pretty much promise you that these will go for more than $100 on E-Bay. Some people really love the hard drive model. They'll want to buy them and now they're a limited commodity!

So sell it and buy the new one. Who on eath would want to cripple it, thus cutting out the local storage abilities? (The new OS doesn't have any "sync to hard drive" software in it, I'm sure.)

You'd be taking something worth a lot of money and cutting it down to the same ability as the little $99 model, thus ruining what made it valuable.

Seriously, who would do that?

All I want is Netflix on my current ATVs. I'd even give Apple a small cut for the privilege.

The reason is simple
The original Apple TV has some low grade, old intel processor and the new Apple TV has the A4 chip. The new software wont work on the old hardware.

Nope, it's just greed. Any Intel processor manufactured in the last 5-8 years is much more powerful than A4 so it's not a valid excuse. Desire to maximize profits by leaving customers out there without support is the only reason.

Oh God. Company does something I don't like, label it "Corporate Greed".

Do you have a better label? How about "out of love for their customers"? Does not sound right, does it?

thank you apple...

i for one appreciate that apple moves forward, better to create new more efficient hardware than dumbed down software for old and new...:apple:

OK, fair enough. Still, there's no reason (beyond greed) that they couldn't have allowed it to be upgraded.

*Facepalm*

Yes, every corporation is out to screw you, it's a conspiracy...

Or it could be that they can't update it because like it has been said, it is on completely different hardware, e.g. PowerPC hardware to Intel hardware, sometimes the software can't make the transition.

Corporative greed. Nothing new.

The software runs on different chips and it would actually take away some features (1080p, purchases, local storage).

Ignoring the fact that this software wasn't designed for the first gen Apple TV hardware at all, it would completely change the product that was purchased in the first place into something different (and possibly undesired).

Last I checked the A4 and an Intel chip are completely different architectures.

I'm sure if you want you can try to get a job with Apple. And once there volunteer your free time on weekends and evenings and port the new system over to the old hardware, with no pay.

Don't want to? Lazy bastard.

Well, Apple isn't preventing anyone from upgrading. As far as I know, all the cracks and hacks that worked yesterday to add more functionality still work today. They just aren't going to spend the money to port their new system to an old box. It sucks, but I get it. I probably wouldn't spend that money either. It's a consumer electronics box, not a computer.

It seems like Apple is hurting themselves by providing so many updates for their phones and iPods. People are starting to think they are ripped off if updates ever stop flowing. It wasn't too long ago that noone issued update after update for previous released items.

If that's all you want buy the new Apple TV. It's much better hardware wise. And it's smaller. And you can save on heating costs through the winter.

How come? Slower processor, smaller RAM, no hard drive. Smaller factor has some advantages but it definitely does not have better hardware.

The Original iPhone came out after the last AppleTV model and it is not getting any software updates any longer either.. for all intents and purposes...

So this is surprising how?

I don't like the fact that you can't watch TV shows on the thing outside of FOX and ABC without having a computer on and the TV shows already downloaded and ready for streaming.

Both of my ATVs currently fit the surrounding decor. The new product appears to be any color we want, as long as it's black... doesn't fit. As the saying says, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Netflix would just be a welcome addition to a neat little product.

That's not to say I won't get the new model... Just reluctant to right now.

Actually, it's probably something to do with the hardware that the new Apple TV is based on. You see, Apple doesn't have a version of iOS for the Core processor just chilling on the shelf that they can simply shove out the door. Make no mistake, the AppleTV runs iOS, it may not run touch iOS, but it runs iOS, and it's probably based on the same A4 chip.

I'm not surprised with this, presume the old hardware just won't support the new software. Don't see why some people are upset with the news. You buy the Apple TV for the things it can do now, not for what Apple might bring out in future updates.

Also recall the fact that the original Apple TV did get updates along the way. At least one major one that I recall and probably some small fixes along the way.

So, yeah, it's not like they totally forgot about it or anything.

No, I'm not talking about power (but the specs can be seen here) but architecture. It's the same issue as running Snow Leopard on a power PC. It has nothing to do with power, because I'm sure a Quad Core G5 can run it just fine. It has to do with the new architecture plain and simple.

As a current Apple TV owner, I would totally understand this if the move to an A4 architecture came with any sort of benefit -- like iOS and apps.

However, for a reason I cannot begin to fathom, Apple switched to the A4 and then cloned the current (hideous, awful) interface, with no apps. So the software is incompatible with old Apple TVs, and there is no interface/app enhancement to compensate.

Positively lame. If the Roku box had any decent, local way to stream iTunes media from my computer, I would take a mallet to my Apple TV and not shed a tear.

Well it sort of makes sense. The original Apple TV is outdated hardware wise.

Mine keeps freezing all the time. And for $99 the new one is MUCH better.

We have to disagree on this one. The only differences (or downgrades, in my opinion) are as follows:

NEW: NO STORAGE+STREAMING / OLD: FIXED STORAGE+STREAMING;
NEW: RENTALS ONLY / OLD: PURCHASED SHOWS AND MOVIES.

The new ATV is probably Apple's most underwhelming "update" in at least the last 10 years; apart from those making extensive use of US-only streamed content, there is absolutely NO reason to prefer it over the old model. And the advantages of AirPlay are relative, to say the least...if the ATV's premise is "streaming", there is little reason to play something on your iDevice and THEN stream it to ATV.

Mine is working fine right here, and will probably get an ATV Flash update to further extend its useful life for the next couple of years...

APPLE IS DEAD.
