Would be a great synergy, that probably only Apple could pull off... Barnes & Noble possibly with mini-Apple stores inside them, sort of like some Best Buy's have with small Apple sections inside the store.

Not everyone goes to an Apple store, or even has one in their town, but this would be a smart way of reaching many more customers, and exposing them to the Apple brand, while they shop in a store for books.

Also, some Branes & Noble stores have Starbucks attached to them or inside them (at least in our city), so that Apple would get even more exposure and also foot traffic.

Apple didn't have to buy music shops to "kill" them, but iBooks haven't taken off big time, so they are most likely trying to tune the process. With or without BN.

In Apple's vision, printed books are supposed to go the same route as CDs and DVDs. The only reason to do that (the buy) would be to learn potential customers mindset and behavior, then offer a better alternative (downloads) in a way users will find beneficial enough.

Kindle, Kobo and Nook all offer the ability to read on Android, iPhone, Ipad and your computer, as well as their own devices. They also allow you to share between your own devices that are linked to your account. So, Apple is really behind the game on this one.

You can share iBooks between any devices linked to the same apple account. iBooks even keeps all the copies synced (like the Kindle does).

"We received a tip from an unproven source..."

That pretty much sums it up. This was pulled right out of someone's butt.
Oh that's not an easy task let me assure you. So much **** up there and so much of it already used in M-R, it's tough for them to find new and still freshly pungent smelling **** each day to report on.

Goodbye paper!!!!

Its obvious why Steve Jobs (and his global domination puppet Apple) would want to buy these stores ... Steve's probably keen to destroy every method of book delivery so everyone in the world will have to use the App store instead!!!

You laugh ... but it started with the buttons on the iPod Nano, then software started disappearing from shelves; and more recently the DVD Drive on the Mac Mini ... I'm telling you!

600 college stores is nothing to sniff at. That's a huge win in a lucrative market.

Apple today announced the acquisition of Chuckie Cheese, making Apple the sole owner of every corporation in the world. A spokesman said they plan on rolling out different colored Apple logos so people will be able to tell the difference between product lines, and in the case of Chuckie Cheese all pies will have the distinctive shape of the ubiquitous Apple logo.

The corpse of Steve Jobs will also attend the upcoming WWDC at the Steve Jobs Center for Awesomeness in Appleville. He is expected to appear for the obligatory 5 minute standing ovation and then be propped in a corner casting his infamous evil eye.

Like my weird story, this is a weird rumor. Can't see the point in it besides more Apple stores. Books????

Google Jeremy Bentham

as a fanboy of both, i'd like to see this, mainly so that BN gets the geek side of apple, and apple gets all the Nook goodness.

however, what i suspect is more utilitarian. BN going to apple to talk about licensing the cash register/iphone set up for their stores. maybe apple talking to bn about combing iBooks and Nook stores to increase pull over publishers.

while iTunes for Nook would rock, i suspect that the dangers of having an Android program would be too much.

Borders will be turned into a virtual library/book store. Nothing will actually be in stock, but while you wait your selections will be downloaded, printed on super new printers and given to you. Every Borders will have access to every book ever printed, millions and millions of them stored in data centers.

You will also be able to author and have your own crackpot book printed and put in the library for sale to the public.

There will be a cafeteria featuring food approved by Jobs, organic vegetarian and not cheap.

So, in a surprising twist, Apple will own the publishing and physical book market along with its share of the digital reader market. And at the same time become the McDonalds of vegetarian food.

I think this rumored has already been squashed. Why not just buy borders?

I read somewhere (quotation needed) that Apple is in the works of buyng the White House.... however i'm not entirely sure since the source reporting it has a very bad historical reputation on rumors related to the White House :D

I actually can't think of a good reason for Apple NOT to buy B&N. They're pretty much the biggest name in Books... and it would work quite well if they want to set up a Kindle competition. Apple's basically taking over the world.... or at least the commercial/business world.

I am just amazed at people doing this:
Read the rumor --> think it unlikely --> dream up unrealistic scenarios --> think they've confirmed that it's unlikely.

Apparently you're so amazed that you proceeded to do essentially the same thing. The MacRumors original post indicated, "We're a little skeptical about the whole thing and mention it primarily to encourage conversation." Why should it be a surprise that (full disclosure) investors would express concerns over how AAPL funds are used?

B&N has a greater penetration in the textbook market than Borders and holds exclusive contracts with many universities to supply them. If Apple wants educators/students to take its iPad more seriously, then leveraging those contracts into ibooks would be very wise. It would be more than worth the entire purchase price of B&N and they would gain valuable real estate which they could then sell, lease or use for possible future Apple stores. I doubt Apple would keep the brick and mortar stores open.

The could also shut down at least one low cost competitor--the Nook. :)

Just buy Adobe already! C'mon!

Why would Apple or Steve Jobs want Adobe?

FLASH alone is an even bigger bag o' hurt than Blu Ray as far as Steve Jobs is concerned and Jobs doesn't seem all that interested in the professional market anymore.

As for Barns & Noble, I can only see 2 reasons of interest...

#1: Some key locations for future Apple stores.

#2: A wedge against Amazon.com, the iPad's only real competition as a book reader.

But I still don't believe it will happen. Apple is probably just kicking the tires and trying to find out just how dirt cheap Barns & Noble will go for.

Nobody likes to pass up a bargain. I have a professional friend who hits going out of business sales routinely. I said to him, "What are you going to do with 30+ flash drives and hundreds and hundreds of blank DVDs?" And his answer was, "I dunno, but they were so cheap, I'll figure something out. Maybe I'll sell them on Ebay!" LOL

Huh?

This makes no sense for Apple to buy them out. They really don't need them. I call BS on this.

Not sure I agree with: "If Apple really wanted to purchase a bookseller, it could have bought Borders at fire sale prices." Why? Because I want a new car.My first choice is an Aston Martin, but I can't afford an Aston Martin, so I'll probably have to settle fora Ford.

Apple CAN afford a Barnes & Noble [Aston Martin], so why would they buy a Borders - which isn't even a Ford since it's a failed company and therefore a tarnished brand?

I agree with everything you've offered here except: "I doubt Apple would keep the brick and mortar stores open." Why not? Steve Jobs has often quoted "beautiful books" as one of his great interests. Apple as conservator of real books by saving the last great book store fits in very well with all the other positives you've highlighted.

Hmm given BN state might not be a bad acquisition
the real estate portfolio is worth 1.6 billion
they can keep locations they want and sell off the rest
merge nook and ibooks making it a 2 horse race with amazon (nook has 25% market share)
kill largest bm bookseller and distributor growing overall ebook market in US.
seams a decent deal given it would require apples 3 weeks profit to pukk it off

I reccon Apple could buy all 4 major record labels and several major book publishers with the money they have in the bank... and they would still have change for a warchest

It's time for Apple to start throwing their cash around. They could buy Amazon for $20 billion and have $56 billion left over!
