The ‘i’ moniker generally signifies heavily consumer oriented products, plus rebranding OSX under iOS would make referring to “full" and mobile versions pretty clunky. They would probably need to extend something like the “pro” moniker into it as well, to identify “OSX” based operating systems.

I mean, can you imagine referring to the next OSX as “iOS Pro”? ugh

Oh well, in any case Apples foray into the consumer environment has given them a LOT more financial success than the professional market. So I guess…

The Mac is dead, long live the iMac.

... wait, that didn’t quite have the gravitas I thought!

Absolutely, positively, NO!!

MacOS has established its identity for so long that changing it would ruin its legacy.

and classic? get with the times! :D

Sounds like Apple is readying itself for the next paradigm shift in it's desktop OS.

When Apple went from OS 9 to OS 10 they rebranded it to the "X" theme due to all the different API's introduced in 10.0.

The next logical step,if they are indeed adding an additional layer on top of the current ones would be to call it something other than "XI". After all "X" is just marketing for the Darwin kernel 10.*

So this tells me they are going to add multi-touch to the desktop/laptop line. And when they do that it will perhaps be using an updated, more robust Darwin.

Maybe Darwin 11.0.

If this is true say goodbye to 10.7

I think Apple will have to go that way if for no other reason than that there are really not any interesting, cool cat names left for naming a bunch more OS X releases ...
iOS could allow Apple to expand into another animal family naming convention!
E.g.:
iOS 1 Grizzly
iOS 2 Koala
iOS 3 Brown
iOS 4 Polar
etc.

Admittedly not as cool as cats

instead, maybe:
iOS Black Widow
iOS Tarantula
then again, maybe not

Hahahaha good try but PLEASE!!! do not get a job at Apple :D

Naming should reflect experience distinction

Assuming any distinction continues to remain between the interface experiences of Apple's Macs compared to Apple's mobile devices -- and I realize that assumption is now under debate going forward -- I would find this no-distinction "umbrella" naming to be confusing. "Mac OS" and "iOS" make sense because the names, like the software interfaces, are distinct. Arguably, the two currently are hardly even a family; distant cousins at best. So any name-grouping going forward would indeed imply an experience-grouping going forward as well.

Agreed.

Apple will buy Adobe and Microsoft just to close them, then buy Nokia to build a data center in Finland

I went on to elaborate on the omissions, but you neglected to quote them.

For me personally, its Final Cut Pro that's a steaming pile and doesn't make efficient use system resources, so it requires a gargantuan box to run ADEQUATELY. I'm waiting to buy that gargantuan box, but it it hasn't been released yet. And in the mean-time, OpenCL was touted as a major enhancement to Mac OS X back in the Leopard time-frame, however, not even Apple has managed to actually put it into practical use. On top of all, the monolithic kernel keeps rearing it's ugly head -- when you see the beach-ball, that's the more in your face indicator of the problem, if my terminology doesn't work for you. :)

Simply put, Apple is TOO focused on high volume hand-held devices to the extent that they are neglecting the evolution of Mac itself from a strictly notebook/desktop and Mac OS native features perspective (monolithic kernel for example), LET ALONE the PRO market, or even the use of OpenCL by Apple's own applications in general.
If you're some kind of special power user that requires more than Apple can supply you, then look elsewhere for your tools. No good buying a Corolla and complaining it doesn't reach 60 in under 5. But for most of us consumers, we don't spend all day looking at the beach ball. A restart is enough if we do.

Sounds microsoftian. How often have I ranted that if you have how many different versions of windows doing different things, none of them end up being good at what they do?

Microsoft got there because as a monopoly, it had no way to expand within it's market. Apple, through the wild successes it has had lately, is in the same place. (obviously, apple's products are way better, and apple still isn't the majority PC maker, but growth potential is hard - they're the majority high end PC maker, and they aren't going into the sub 1000 dollar market.)

Everyone one is forgeting a few things

What are iOS apps developed on?
What do the Cash Registers at Apple Stores run on?
What powers the App Store?
The iBooks Store?
The iTunes Store?
What does Steve Jobs give his keynotes using?
What does Apple make its marketing materials with?

The Mac is far from dead

I don't know what you're on about, but that stuff runs on love! Sweet sweet unconditional love!

Personally I would go the other way, and drop the 'i' from the iMac, similar to the way the iBook branding was dropped.

You would then have the Mac and MacBook at the consumer end, and the Mac Pro and MacBook Pro at the professional end, which along with the Mac Mini all running Mac OS.

Meanwhile the 'i' designation can be used for the low powered ultra portable devices - iPod, iPhone, and iPad - all running iOS.

This would be a much clearer identity of two totally different product lines - the Mac platform which is totally open and the closed i platform, on which developers abilities are limited and users have to go through the App Store and can only install Apple approved applications.

I see this aspect as being as the major difference to users rather than whether or not their is a touch interface.

With the introduction of the iPad, as well as the presence of the iPod Touch, the iPhone OS name did seem out of place (though so does iTunes for a bloated application which now includes other media forms and manages hardware devices) so the rebranding there made sense. There is no logic or benefit I can see from renaming Mac OS, but I can see it leading to a lot of confusion.

Michael.

Of course they will. Imagine how much funds they are pumping into mobile technology compared to desktop technology.

Apple is deciding our future, and our future is an under-featured, air-tight OS with flashy animations and little room to grow without Apple's help.

You might be thinking of Chromium, but Mac OS X will continue to grow and evolve in its own way. There will be some overlap between the projects - OS X will get features from iOS and vice versa. For example, code signing is dominant on iOS and will probably begin to play a larger role in OS X.

The pro market and the science market for Apple are large enough that they won't dumb down the operating system.

Besides, the article speaks of this as strictly a marketing term.

There is no way in hell Apple would ever do something like this. They aren't dumb, they know it would be the end of the Mac platform and people would jump ship.

Besides, Steve already denied there would be an App Store of any kind in 10.7, so why would a name change (which I am against as well) make him go back on his word?

An App Store isn't a general bad idea, I mean a single place where you can find a whole lot of apps to do a multitude of things is great. As long as it is voluntary, which is a crucial point when it comes to regular computers.

True, eventually when it reaches 11.0, OS X will have to be called 'OS XI', but dumping the name 'OS X' for 'iOS' is kinda lame... BUT in keeping with the awful 'iPad' name, it seems par for the course...

PLUS there is already an 'IOS' that has existed for decades that is one of the worse operating systems for internet connected devices that I've ever seen!

Try to get IOS on a Cisco ASA working without calling for support in a weak and frustrated whimper...

The very mention of 'ios' makes me cringe. Oh, and Cisco's visual GUI isn't that much better either... So many choices, so many ways to go wrong!

Can't the think of something more appealing? AOS? Galactica? Verge?

Plus I wonder how much the licensing fee was paid to Cisco to use IOS... Money wasted in my book. Is Steve getting eccentric in his old age?

i

From the iMac's original introduction keynote, the five words originally cited by Steve Jobs which the Apple "i" stands for:

- internet
- individual
- instruct
- inform
- inspire

Still accurate? Still relevant? Across all of Apple's products? Discuss.

Surely they cannot use "OSX" forever as it originally meant "OS v10" with the "X" Roman numeral. But "OS XI" doesn't seem right -- so Apple needs a new name.

How about "OS Xi" for "OS v11" and then this would incorporate the "i" just fine (just after the X).

Of course... then what would they do for v12 ?

Easiest Name changeing is like iOS

iOS 4 was iPhone OS 4
MAC OS X 10.6 changed the same way would be OS X 10.6 to shorten the name OSX 6 since the 10 was twice in the name and MAC is the device.

iOS 4 and OSX 6 don't have the same version number the should get straight from iOS4 to iOS7.

iOS + version number for small mobile devices, iTV, firmware for fast internet access
OSX + version number for working platform
iSystem + version number for server functions

but if the MAC product an additional gui like the iOS gui then it would be reasonable to se iOS as the OS name, but I hope they keep a gui like the current MAC OS X gui.

CISCO can be bought, look at the name iPhone :D I sure hell hope Steve is getting eccentric! most of histories geniuses where eccentric, I hope Steve will not be different.
