Stupid sensationalist title. Apple may be buying more of this stuff than any other company, but that doesn't mean that it is Apple that is creating the shortage. It's Apple plus all of the other companies buying it that are creating the shortage.

When demand outpaces supply, prices tend to rise, so I am not quite sure why everyone is high-fiving.

Do you remember the holiday season just a couple years ago, when there simply weren't enough iPods to meet demand?

It's just crazy to think about how Apple has grown the past several years. :)

Great minds think alike here.

I wonder if this is all for iPods or if there is some other device snatching up all of the demand?

If it was just for iPods and Iphones Apple would have to be selling far more than has been acknowledged. However that doesn't mean a tablet. Apple could do something wonderful like put all of the the apps and OS on a fast solid state storage device and use the harddrive for bulk user storage. This would be extremely nice on an IMac but maybe a tiny bit expensive for a Mini.

What is would do is increase the perceived speed of the machines without adding much complexity. A serial ATA port would be more or less free and the portable storage modules have thin formats that would make such an approach easy to design in. 64 GB is about the minimal size required here.

Nope, Apple is pretty much to blame.

When you have companies decline to ship to anyone other than Apple it is certainly Apple causing the problem.

But flash memory is certainly used in A LOT more items than just Apple products, I mean c'mon. What about the latest generation of flash-based camcorders, TV's, handheld gaming devices, digital picture frames, industrial applications, audio electronics and on and on...

I'm sure Apple's sales do sway the market some but not as much as we'd all believe.

Yes, I don't like the way this story is written, because it doesn't give a reason why, or how much flash memory Apple has bought. It sounded like the real story was that there's a industry-wide flash memory shortage, but macrumors strongly believed that it's all thanks to Apple so decided to throw that in the tittle. If that's the case then it's bad journalism, and if Apple truly is to blame it's bad journalism because they don't explain how Apple could be responsible, when everything uses flash. In other words it doesn't make sense. When you think off all of the devices that uses flash memory, like UBS sticks, SD Cards, Digital Cameras, High Def Camcorders, Cell Phones. Makes me want to google to see how others reported this story, but I doubt this is big news.

Its bound to happen though. Apple has been notorious for hoarding NAND/Flash memory. This isn't a first. Apple almost killed Samsungs NAND supply a few years ago by buying almost all of it.

It doesn't help though that flash vendors deliberately orchestrate shortages to keep their prices high - that is why SSD will never become a reality as a cheaper technology will come along that doesn't have the cartel like behaviour as what happens in the flash market.

If that's the case then it's bad journalism, and if Apple truly is to blame it's bad journalism too because they don't explain how Apple could be responsible, when everything uses flash. In other words it doesn't make sense.

All the big flash producers whine about the dropping cost of flash - and amazing how suddenly a number of factories suddenly require upgrading hence they're taken offline. All this doesn't occur because of coincidence; it is an orchestrated programme by flash producers to jack up prices, reduce supply then turn around to the biggest buyer on the block and blame that - being Apple. An attempt to deflect off their corrupt cartel like behaviour.
