no, not only in apples world
^ I wound partially agree. The consumer market is mostly true that upgradeability is mostly a past idea. Most users never did, though niche users would like it.

In the "enterprise" or professional market for any computer used by large computers, or workstations -- upgradeability is still expected. For the desktop computers used for simple data-entry, application usage (word etc.) -- leasing for a set number of years (expired lease) just flip and lease new ones.

if Timmy, Phil and Jony only would have gone in vacation after Steve passed today, instead of ruining the entire Mac line, we would have had today a beautiful Mac Pro with many card slots and lots of ports instead of a trash can full of dongles

That misses the idea, I want to do the upgrades, not have to lose my puter for a week or so to get the upgrades done.
Yeah, taking a large computer into the store -- not my idea of fun. Though the upgrade is really -- if you really messed up. The computer is more for businesses that want a clean look - probably client facing in some way. Personally, I prefer rack mounting the computers and running fibre to the desk -- more secure and clean at the same time.

I hope people here don't forget the fanfare involved with the previous model, "can't innovate anymore my ass," and the trailers with tantalizing cutscenes that made it seem like it would be the best computer since sliced bread. That was only 4 years ago. It turns out that isn't a timeless design, like the model before it which lasted for over a decade.

Yep. Schiller's mouth was clearly writing cheques his ass couldn't cash with that boastful moment!

Why do I have this uneasy sense that they're still going to screw this up?

They could, but the one thing that we have going into this is that it would not make sense just to offer what they have in the iMac Pro but without the monitor attached. It has to be better, it has to be more - and I really don't think the appliance designers at Apple could be so stupid as to not understand that. It might fall short of what I think they should do, but it will be way better than the Mac Pro 2013 as far as the top end professionals that had issues with it.

I’m very curious to see what Apple releases for a monitor, as that will have benefit to both laptop and desktop users. I’ve had a poly Cinema Display, an aluminum Cinema HD Display, and a Thunderbolt Display. I ultimately sold the Thunderbolt and kept the trusty HD for work, as it’s more portable, better on my eyes, and overall the best display that I think Apple’s ever made. So if Apple insists on giving us a glassy surface, my hope is that they’ll at least provide some sort of touch input, which would help justify what will no doubt be a ridiculously high price tag. I still believe that a touch display with an eGPU to accelerate attached MacBooks would be a truly winning combination. I couple my MBP to an iPad Pro with AstroPad right now and it’s an amazing experience - it keeps me completely mobile, but gives me pro-level drawing input. Even then, I still do 75% of my work at my desk, so having a dedicated desktop with the same input would be a very welcome enhancement. $2000 for an upgraded Thunderbolt Display? Probably not. For a 27” touch screen? Definitely for sure.

I don’t think you’d be able to use a touchscreen monitor for a few hours like you can your iPad Pro; after 15 or 20 minutes of holding your arm outstretched I think it would feel like it’s ready to fall off. Apple has said many, many times they don’t think a touchscreen monitor is a good solution. But you never know I guess.

Regarding glossy vs. matte, I think that ship has sailed. I sympathize with you; I bought Dell Ultrasharp monitors for years, but the screen on a 27” 5K iMac beats them hands down, imo. With some rooms it is tough to avoid reflections, but if it’s possible a little re-arranging can really help. When outside on a laptop, I do sometimes miss matte displays.

I get the hate on the trash can, and am *really* looking forward to the new Mac Pro... having said that I've been delighted with my fully loaded Mac Pro (note I'm a developer that works with large design files, but not a heavy digital design/media person).

My 12-core trash can ((upgraded from a base one to 128GB, 1TB SSD, 12-core... yes you can do some of that) is a beast in building large Xcode projects, can have Xcode, Photoshop, Illustrator, Office, Sketch and few other tools open with plenty of headroom left.

And even when stressed it's far more quiet than my MBP... oh and I can put it in it's case, strap it on my shoulder and bike to work with it when I want to.

For some of us it's an ideal machine... the only problem I have with it is I wish there was a socket compatible CPU upgrade... the big fault was the socket didn't have a few more years in it... however this Mac would do me (and I would imagine many others) quite well for at least another 3 years.

I don't know if the next Mac Pro will be able to travel and operate quietly.as well as the trash can.. some Pros really appreciate that. Just an opinion/observation

Indeed, i love my hexcore can as well. The power and portability is a great a great combo for the work I'm doing. Its super robust and quiet and i can use it with a 34'' screen at my base studio.

Mac prooooooo...... (sob) (sob)

I wonder if it’s user’s upgradable....especially with the processor

Honestly id be happy with an ADC type connector again for the display. Running 2 of the old apple 20 inch cinema displays was great. You only had one cable going back from each monitor. It drives me nuts now having to have a power cable and video cable plus in some cases an audio cable going back to your tower.

Also if apple does not fix the mac pro to be a true "tower" ill probably stick with making a hackintosh. I really want to see some PCI slots and some M.2 Slots.

Honestly i could care less if the processor is upgradable. Those last the longest. I want to be able to add storage and PCI cards and possibly in a few years update the GPU.
