More features is missing the point, and it's major flaw...

I hate the HiFi. I have since the day it was released. I've never listened to one, but for me, a speaker can sound like the thunderous voice of God talking to Moses and I still wont buy it if it's ugly. I mean... it's white! It's a frickin' speaker, and it's white! Nowhere in my living room or anywhere else where I lissten to music is there anything that matches. It would just stick out like a soar thumb.

So, needless to say, the one improvement I'm hoping for has nothing to do with specs and features. I think the HiFi is set when it comes to bells and whistles and anything more would spoil its simplicity, but it needs to blend into a listening environment, not shout "Here I am!"

Could there be a HiFi in the works to go along with iTV? I was thinking about it this way: The current HiFi has optical input, right? What if Apple designed a HiFi to simulate surround sound (much like the Bose 3-2-1 System) that had multiple inputs (maybe 2 optical, 2 rca) that was meant to be used as part of a home theatre?
I think it would be wicked, while it wouldn't completely remove the need for a receiver, it would provide an alternative route for those not wanting to spend as much on speakers & a receiver.
Just a thought, I've been wracking my brain (and have been since the mini came out) as to how I would incorporate Apple into my entertainment system properly (for my own needs and interests) and this is just something that I thought of.

I was hoping Apple would utilize their "iPod Boombox" trademark and release a smaller version of the iPod Hi-Fi, but apparently they nixed that plan (perhaps because of the chance it could cannibalize Hi-Fi sales).

Where are you placing it where it doesn't match? White (& black) can blend in wit just about any environment.

I've had had a hifi since it was released...

and its a great piece of kit. I am always amused by the experts who have never even listened to one ranting about how crappy it is. This speaker is fantastic, it sounds great and puts out a lot of sound. I used it as the sole speaker for an outdoor reception/dance with over 100 people and everybody was blown away by it. In fact a couple people at the party went out and bought their own.

Did you not read the part of the article where it said "second in revenue". this means they have beaten EVERY speaker system except one. There are zillions of ipod speakers from Bose, JBL and others and Apple has beaten almost ALL of them were it counts in n revenue. Sounds like they've got a hit

No. They are fourth in the speakers that are made for iPod. I am sure you intended to say that.

And I highly doubt that number. I wanna see a macpoll, to see any form of justification. Also, it could just be that the market ($ to be made) from the speakers for iPod is just small.

I don't think the market for money to made with iPod speakers is small, I'm basing this on the fact that there are so so so sooo many options. If there wasn't moeny to made, why are so many companies in the market?
Also, even if they are in forth, that's still pretty good considering it's relatively new (though you would think it would be higher with all the "sheep" - for the record I hate using that word, but I guess it fits)

I have the (relatively) cheapy portable Logitech mm50 speakers, and whilst you get what you pay for they do the job, and the rechargeable battery does give many hours of playback for when you're in the garden or on a trip.

It also makes a nice bedroom music system and is very compact. And the remote control is very useful.

The Apple setup is just quite expensive, and doesn't have the same sense of value for the functionality provided.

Wow, everyone here has talked about the HiFi's potential for additional features yet no one has really commented on the sound!

I'm no audiophile yet I can honestly say its one of the worst sounding speakers I've heard at its price range. I think Apple should enhance/add more features second only to improving the sound first. It looks like a center speaker and almost sounds like one; all midrange and midbass.

Funny thing is, I consider myself an Apple fanboy too.

i hope apple makes some small speakers like these . there a good size and they are louder than a PSP. Plus, they don't need batteries. there great for working out doors :) hope apple makes some HI-FIpods.

The iPod HI FI has to be one of the least interesting products Apple has ever released. They should save their development resources for other things, such as refining OS X, computer hardware, etc. Let the third party manufacturers make the iPod Hi Fi gadgets, IMHO

Funny you should say that, that's one of very few reasons why I'd by an iPod to begin with. :)

I can see Apple coming out with a 5.1 and a 7.1 sound system that is wireless. If "iTV" can do wireless video and audio via 802.11, certainly Apple can come with a wirless Home Theather speaker setup to complete the experience. Oh yeah...maybe that 42" inch LCD screen/monitor wouldn't be too bad either...lol

This is exactly what I would like to see them pursue, providing that Apple experience in the home theater world.

What I'm looking for is a decent high-end clock radio with a built-in iPod Data Connector dock. Cambridge Soundworks is supposed to have them available very soon, based on the SoundWorks 730 and 740 models. :)

The Hi-Fi is Great!!

When this first came out, I must admit, I was underwhelmed like a lot of other people. However, I was recently considering wiring up some speakers in my kitchen, to play audio from my home-audio set up in the lounge, and also play music from an iPod & Universal Dock. Having looked at all the possibilties and the cost (and hassle) of installing wires under the floorboards and adding speaker switches etc. I opted for buying one of these units instead.

- Wow!!! I'm glad I did! I was instantly blown away with the power and sound quality of this thing!! Plus, the colour white goes really well in my kitchen (it matches my fridge and washing machine!) - and keeps my wife happy, as there are no spaghetti wires all over the place! This really is a great piece of kit.

Geneva Lab Sound System L

Geneva Labs is reputed to have the best all-in-one iPod speaker system in the world. iLounge gave is a very favorable review.

I really like my HiFis and the JBL OnTime. I don't think I'll wait around for a new version of the HiFi before spurging for the Sound System L, though.
