Don't underestimate Apple.

im not saying its not possible... ust that they are not releasing it anytime soon, they already have a g6 but when do you think we'll see it? its just a marketing thing, teh people are not ready. when ipods sell like walkmans then we can say that the ipod video will see the lught of day.

I never underestimate apple. Just saying that let's not expect this soon.. wasnt this on page 2?

Do you think steve has a PDA and if so what kind does he use?

i worked there for a year & never saw him w/ anything resembling a PDA. this was a few years ago (just before the iPod-era), but i would have loved to see him tote a newton around, that would have been worth seeing...

I don't want cell phones to kill PDAs because its counter-productive since the trend in cell phones are to shrink the form factor whereas with PDAs, you want as much screen as possible within reason. Cell phones are fine for simple calendar features and songs for ringtones, but other features kill the battery life which is supposed to be devoted to talk time. Non North American markets want the most features possible on their cell phones because dedicated computers were generally cost prohibitive (since computer makers didn't subsidize hardware through a subscription component) and monopolistic national telephone companies refused to offer ISP services at a flat rate for traditional modem connections.

Similarly, the Sony PSP would be even better if it came bundled with PalmOS or Symbian. Not to mention iTunes Music Store compatibility...

I agree with you totally, the only way i want everything wrapped into a tiny cellphone is, when i have a nice un-roll-able oled screen that can be neatly tucked away. Other wise give me a mini tablet (bout 3.5"*6") with stripped osx and i am set.

Video on the iPod will happen, but it will NEVER be a singular or even primary feature. Why? There's just not a huge demand for this type of functionality on a small portable device. Songs work because we can listen to our headphones while we are doing other things, and because they are short, cheap and ubiquitous.

Even though we can now make iMovies, I bet the number of people who have made more than 5 imovies counts in the few thousand, not the few million. And even among these, there just isn't a need to carry them around with you to watch them on a tiny screen. Even if you can connect the player to a larger screen to watch, that's not a huge need that is now lacking.

But, like I say, they'll eventually add video capabilities because it will be easy to do, and will be an added feature. But, it won't sell millions of ipods.

NOW...back to MY pet product. I was a huge Newton Fan. The Newton changed my life, and then, sadly, it was taken away. I have a Treo, but it doesn't come close to replacing the functionality of my Newton.

I take a lot of notes for my work, and for the rest of my life as well. I jot down thoughts, ideas, reminders, etc. When I had the Newton, I was able to capture all of this electronically. It was truly a portable "notebook" for me in a way that our current laptop configurations never will be.

Smartphones will never do this for us. A newly designed and released Newton COULD do this, as well as a myriad of other things as well. It COULD do practical video display. Then it WOULD make sense to have video, as an added feature, on a screen large enough to actually watch something on.

Bring back the Newton, Steve. The time has come.

Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate

I know I'm certainly not the first to mention this, but an Apple / Nintendo alliance just makes sense. An iPod / Gameboy combo would rule the world!
Seems to me like this new chip, combined with the ARM 7 and ARM9 (or, perhaps a newer, more powerful chip) used in the DS, Apple and Nintendo could creat a portable game and multimedia machine that could sell a phenomenal amount of units. The Gameboy Advance / SP has sold over 30 million units worldwide. I believe that if this unit was done right, it could very well match those numbers. Taking this idea a bit further, Apple and Nintendo could have an iTunes-like store that allowed users to download games directly to the the unit (iBoy??).

Also, Nintendo could really really use Apple's input in designing a home console. Apple rules cool right now. Nintendo is anything but cool. Just imagine a sleek white and silver home console that plays Nintendo's games and uses Apple's iLife suite of software. The perfect media center.

(just wishful thinking)

Wrong. We want super smartphones because we don't like carrying more than one device. We are not gadget freaks.

Wrong. What we really want is a super intelligent Star Trek style communicator pin that is linked to a galaxy wide communication infrastructure where it's even smart enough for you to simply start a conversation with the persons first name and it can route the call to the right person.

I guess you just gotta make sure no two people you communicate with have the same first name but once you do that you're good to go! :)

But with those, you can't load annoying ringtones. So it won't sell.

We don't all want super smart phones. I want a small, compact phone for making calls, taking fun photos and having my address book/calendar handy. I can even envisage having a few games on it. The key word for me is here is small. I want to be able to fit this thing in my jeans pocket, in any handbag. I did have a p900 for a while, I traded down to a k700 because it was too bulky to keep around all the time and the screen size meant the battery life died too quickly.

The other device I want is something with a decent sized screen to go online with via wifi rather than GPRS/3G. Screen to be big enough to read documents comfortably or watch video.

I'm sure that these multimedia chips will bring lots of interesting products to market. Time will tell whether the mass market will want or need them.

I would to have video functionality (is that a word?) on the iPod but perhaps not so much with being able to watch the video on the actual iPod screen. Like what was mention, the video-out (or even HD-out, I personally don't care) would be a great way to transport TV episodes, iMovie files, etc etc around without having to a) hook-up my laptop or computer to a TV b) burn a DVD while at the same time having to convert everything to MPEG so it'll play.
It would be awesome to be able to just copy DiVX or AVI files to the iPod and have just a file-browswer interface on the iPod screen and have the files play full screen on a TV. I think that would be much MUCH cheaper than putting in the kind of screen that everyone wants on the current iPod form... just my opinion, but I would love to be able to transport movie files on my iPod and watch them on any TV I could hook it up to.

You know, we see stuff like this fairly regularly. New technology designed to revolutionize everything. I've seen lots of cool little editions added to existing products, but I haven't really seen much that revolutionized everything. I know the iPod is cool and yada yada yada (not bashing them, I just know people will bring them up as they try to everywhere), but I haven't seen much.

what id like to see...

iPod - music

PowerPod - music video games etc (plus cool alu. casing)

how about the iFlicks Movie Store integrated into iTunes.

Bravo Jimmni! Well said. That's the Apple difference (these days). Products *dont'* make it out the door until they've been scrutinized to death. Apple is the technology leader these days, and the proof is all around is. People want iPods! And now they're wanting Macs. I talk to more PC users every day that are taking a serious look. The Mac is back baby, and we're just getting started.

Technology leader ???? Puhhhhhhhlease ...... iPod has remained pretty much static since introduced .... innovation from Apple .....perhaps but they proceed at a snail's pace ... if you want truly great technology these days look to the Koreans ...those dewds introduce cutting edge, full-featured stuff at break neck speeds (Samsung and LG ... ) ... add something to the iPod and it looks like a giant KLUDGE (iTrip, voice recorder, photo import adaptor etc etc etc).... if Apple must take their time to deliver product (and I have no qualms with that) give us something full-featured and spare us that BS mantra that less is more ... yeah it's more to Apple's bottom line !!!!

My bottom line: I won't buy anything from Apple if it necessitates my buying a half dozen 3rd party products to make it do what it should be doing from the outset ..... it's called INTEGRATION

maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd like to check my mail and chat on my pod. I like the slide down keyboard designs of the lastest pocket PC's/phones. Conserves space and you get a full keyboard. I had 2 ipods, then got a shuffle. I don't use the ipods anymore because all they do is play music, and my shuffle does that and it's an order of magnitude smaller. There's no benefit for me to carry around the extra weight. So, while Apple got my dough for the other 2 ipods, they won't again till i get some futher functionality.

That said, the PPC's are junk, but you can see the opportunity for Apple to do it right. I'd like that.

Well, i think it's been pointed to before, but I'll say it again. It's not the ipod, it's itunes. itunes is just absolutely the best jukebox player ever invented (or bought ;-)). The ipod's seamless integration with itunes is what makes it work. I'm as upset about the static nature of the ipod as of late, but those korean players don't have the software to make good use of the features they're packing in. Apple is a software company, and they're the best there is overall. That's the killer.
