Only change I'd need is to be able to communicatie with people. Any and all people I need to communicate with. Transparently, regardless their hardware platform choice.
And what exactly is stopping you from communicating with any and all hardware phone platform choices at the moment?

Is there a big "STOP" Tim Cook pop-up when you try to text an android phone?

A lot of people switched to telegram.
Many people have Telegram accounts. Telegram is popular because of the public groups, where dodgy things like piracy is commonplace. There are a lot of Telegram public groups for direct downloads of pirated Netflix (and various other services’) TV shows and movies.

Doesn’t mean they “switched.” Most people in my country don’t mind having multiple chat apps (WhatsApp, line, WeChat, etc). Nobody actually “switched” to one or the other, it’s just another chat app they have.

I have used Apple’s messages app from day one. I never cared for all the “other” ones as most finally revealed they were selling or giving your personal details to someone else that I did not wish to have that information.

Others like the other apps. It is great we that we can still make a few personal choices.

Man that looks terrible. iMessage needs an update to stay on par with other messaging services, but not sure this is it.

I think the app is fine. However, if additional features are added, I hope they allow the user, i.e. the device owner, to turn them off.

After all, I still cannot place icons where I want to, on MY OWN iOS device. Rather odd that...

In Europe we barely use iMessage. I only use it for SMS messages with various services.
I use most of the time Whatsapp and then Telegram.
Please don’t profess to speak for the entirety of Europe with your anecdotes :p. I use iMessage plenty myself, and so do the people I talk to, obviously. Europe is a big and heterogeneous place.

I love FB Messenger, but iMessage has to be compatible with SMS/MMS.
The app is called Messages, not iMessage. The app Messages can send iMessage and sms/mms.

Telegram is “free” as in it’s not subject to the cancel culture or US unilateral sanctions. It’s available in Russia and Iran, can’t say the same about Meta, Apple and Google products.

Telegram got banned once in my country.
Anything IP based is not "free" as anyone in power can just block the access.

No, there is a difference between your own country blocking it vs US blocking it. I assume you are from Israel or India.

One is denial of service, the other is censorship.

True. I love that the backup system when iMessage is not working. Apple Messages App is decent but syncing service is bad.

In the end, it’s whether the user have access or not, regardless who blocked it.

With Signal around, I’m not sure what’s the attraction to Telegram anymore, other than those dodgy public groups (eg piracy).

If you are into Russian stuff, like sports (figure skating, etc.), and politics, you use Telegram. Also, I have some Russian friends.

Sure the UI is simple on the Messages app, but it's lacking in functionality and usability in comparison to Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp.

I've been wanting them to implement a message archive feature for years so the past messages are put away until something new is texted. The pinned feature doesn't do much for me because without seeing the text next to the contact photo. It's easy to forget someone texted you if a reply isn't sent right away.

Also, there isn't much to customize each of the chat windows. It's pretty easy type a message into the wrong window.

And also I wish they would show the contact photos in zoomed mode on iPhone. Text just looks blah and again, it's easier to select the wrong chat window.

With all of the folks saying that Messages is fine makes me wonder if they used Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp.

I think the CoreLibrary needs an overhaul for Facetime and iMessage and iCloud.
