Apple is in talks to secure a deal for a Big Ten college football and basketball streaming package, according to The Athletic. Both Apple and Amazon are said to be vying for the streaming rights, with Apple joining the negotiations following news that USC and UCLA will join the league in 2024.

Big Ten media rights are expected to go to CBS and NBC in addition to Fox for live games, but the streaming package could potentially go to Apple or Amazon. At the current time, there's no word on how a streaming package will be structured, but it could be similar to Friday night MLB games or the NFL's weekly Amazon Prime package.

Apple has been investing heavily in live sports in recent months to increase the appeal of Apple TV+. Apple has launched Friday Night Baseball in partnership with the MLB, and in 2023, it will be the exclusive home of Major League Soccer.

Rumors indicate that Apple is also pursuing the National Football League's Sunday Ticket package, and in the past, it has discussed a content deal with Pac-12.

As a college football fan, I am curious how all the conference consolidation/dissolution etc is going to impact all these TV and streaming rights. Take this one as an example... is Apple still on the hook to pay for the rights if the the Big 10 were to lose say 4 of the marquee schools?

As an Illini grad class '81, I'm glad Big 10 may be coming to Apple TV. Not too enthusiastic about the continuously growing Big 10 though

Apple will be a big player in the new Pac 1x deal... especially given the number of grads. Maybe even tier 2 rights. We'll see.

"On the hook" is relative. The contract would stipulate they'd probably have a choice to drop them, or get a discount.

Snore. If anything is less interesting than watching giant mutants smash each other to wreckage over the location of a ball I don't know what it is.

And Nascar is no better.
Don't forget the copious, extended commercial breaks that pad the runtime from 18 minutes of actual play to over three hours of commentary and commercials:

Wake me up when they add tennis.

Lol. Classic MR.

I'd expect an Apple announcement about football (or any testosterone-required sport) to be as well-received around here as an Apple foray into woodworking tools or hunting gear.

Apple, get Major League Rugby! It’s still cheap!

Good call!

If it's not SEC then it don't matter

Last thing we need is Apple getting SEC rights and we have to be subjected to games called by the JV squad of announcers like they lined up for MLB games. I’m fine with them relegating this to boring Big 10 games. I’m sure Apple PR is looking forward to trying to hype Indiana/Iowa.

This is B1G news! As one of the 2 “power conferences” of the future, this should help drive AppleTV+ subscriptions. OTOH, it’s getting annoying replacing a giant cable bill with a giant cable bill and several smaller streaming bills.

Pfffft...SEC! SEC! SEC!
The B1G will pay out more to member schools than the SEC under the new media rights arrangement. But eventually I expect the B1G and SEC to develop a new national championship playoff involving their respective conference champions and some at large teams from other conferences.
