The point is that there is an important difference that make people buy one and not the other. It’s therefore really not the same model.
Pretty interesting that they share a single Wikipedia entry, while the Pro and Pro Max also share an entry

The 13 and 13 mini also shared the same page on Apple’s website at the time, as the regular and Plus models do now, and as the Pro and Pro Max still do. If they were their own models wouldn’t Apple have a dedicated page for them?

Anyway none of this matters it’s all semantics. They’re obviously not the same phone, but they’re more similar than different

Seriously what is going on at Apple? Remember 2007, when Steve released ONE, just 1 iPhone?
Everyone was happy, it was small and light, fit in your pocket, truly portable, had a headphone jack, etc.

Really no one asked for 6 different iPhones Apple!

What about just one portable phone with a headphone jack?

I hope that the 18 pro and the 18 Pro Max have the same feature set (aside from the display size)

I don’t like when Apple only offers the better camera on the max version instead of both pro model iPhones so hopefully Apple continues doing it the way that it has been doing starting with the 16 pro
What do you care what the larger phone has or doesn’t have if that’s not the phone you want, as long as Apple isn’t artificially withholding features from the smaller phone that you do want? A larger phone has more space for more components. Do you want Apple to artificially withhold features from the larger phone users (namely those who don’t care for more battery) just so the smaller phone people feel better?

Yea, im ok with choices when all the choices work.. Lately this $1,200 iPhone pro model while takes a little better pictures than my iPhone 13 Pro at least when I opened my camera app I didn't have to beg to take a picture. I am not on any beta, I am up to date I have plenty of storage space blah blah blah. It's just boring with the word intelligence after it. So if you can't do one product correctly why even try and do six its like quantity over quality here and this isn't a dating game... Also yes ive reinstalled the OS ive done the blah blah no.. its just crap ai that seems to be taking over Silicon Valley and its not really doing anything... but answering thank you's...

Cant wait they release the 17, so we finally be getting the 19 rumours.

moving the standard and e models to the following year is just a shallow attempt at upselling the edge/pro models to the impatient.

Sad to say, it'll probably work amazing.

Here's the real genius.
If the air releases at $999, and the pro at $1099 and pro max at $1199; then everyone's going to throw a fit because the cheapest new model is now $999.

However, release the $1999 iphone fold next to it, and suddenly $999/$1099 seems like a comparative bargain. That's the magic of price anchoring.

Pro and Pro Max aren’t really different models…
So long as there is near feature parity, then I agree. This is no different than MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch.

I say “near feature parity” because even the MBP 16-inch can get a slightly better feature set like better speakers.

But for Macs the 4-quadrant model was:
- Consumer Laptop
- Consumer Desktop
- Pro Laptop
- Pro Desktop

Mac has not followed this in recent years and many have scratched their head on Mac Studio versus Mac Pro or even Mac Mini versus iMac.

If Apple wants to do lots of iPhone models they should approach that with specific target audiences. The more options you give the harder it is to make a purchase.

Apple are going to hit some limits here I think.

The sales numbers will take a hit I'd say.

I remember when there was a single iPhone every year, before Apple went hyper-focused on market segmentation and profits. They led the industry, giving people what they wanted before they knew they wanted it, rather than catering to their whims and muddying their product lines.

“Do one thing, and do it well.”

Good times.

I couldn't care less how many phones Apple have in their range, but FFS make a small one!

I'm convinced Apple will create more problems for themselves by forcing people to cling onto their old small phones until they cough and die before moving to some godawful Android device that they can at least fit comfortably into their pocket.

(I don't care how many downvotes I get for this).

And it weighed only 135g, same as the iPhone 12 mini. Not everyone wants to cary around a 200+gram slab of glass and metal in their pocket.

I think many people agree with you, many of us are holding on to our old small devices just hoping ...

The problem is Apple's greed, they might sell "only" a few tens of millions of such a device, and a few tens of millions of phones is not enough to maintain their 40% profit per phone.

This is true, but people are more tech-literate today than they were when the 4-quadrant model was introduced 25+ years ago, and Apple also has the financial health to be able to expand and take more risks. How many products does Sony make? They’re smaller than Apple.

Not saying Apple should spread themselves that thin, but they can definitely afford to diversify some. Making 4 phones isn’t too crazy when it’s their best selling product segment. Plus those that want the folding phone will know who they are, so besides that it’s just 3 options really

You make some great points there.
