Apple is considering manufacturing some of its iPads in India as it works to cut down on its reliance in China, reports CNBC. Apple has discussed relocating some iPad manufacturing to India with Indian officials, but there are hurdles to overcome, such as manufacturing expertise.

There have been no "concrete plans" established as of yet, but discussions are ongoing, and Apple is motivated to expand manufacturing in countries outside of China. Sources that spoke to CNBC warned that India has a lack of "highly skilled talent and individuals with expertise in building highly complex devices," which could slow down Apple's efforts.

Transitioning some manufacturing to India has been Apple's plan since 2017. The company began with producing some older iPhone models like the iPhone SE in the country, and has slowly ramped up iPhone manufacturing. The launch of the iPhone 14 models marked the first time that Apple used India for the manufacturing of flagship iPhones, and some of the iPhone 14 models are assembled in India.

Apple supplier Foxconn has also been investing in India, and Apple is said to be aiming to produce approximately 25 percent of iPhones in India by 2025. Other Apple suppliers such as Wistron and Pegatron have expanded to India to help Apple expand manufacturing outside of China as part of a long term goal.

Apple has been criticized for its reliance on China, which has become a major issue in 2022 with rising tensions between the U.S. and China and the ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns in the country. Right now, Apple's iPhone 14 Pro models are in short supply due to restrictions at Foxconn manufacturing facilities that resulted in worker riots and protests.

In November, Apple confirmed that iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max shipments would be lower than expected due to the issues at the Foxconn facility. Foxconn is responsible for manufacturing approximately 70 percent of the iPhone 14 Pro models. Apple could see a significant hit to holiday revenue as a result, and shipments are not expected to return to normal until late December at the earliest.

While Apple has been working to reduce its presence in China for many years, The Wall Street Journal said over the weekend that Apple's plans to shift production to other countries like India and Vietnam have accelerated. Apple is telling its suppliers to "plan more actively" for assembling iPhones in other countries.

I would add transport infrastructure, power grid, and supply chain proximity to the major obstacles to manufacturing consumer electronics in India. These are long-standing problems that are not easily solved because they are structural in Indian politics and economic policy. If I had to bet, I would put money on Vietnam in the short run, say the next five to ten years, and on India in the long run (don't expect a payout for at least 15-20 years).

Those are a thing of past. Apple is already manufacturing iPhones in India, isn’t it? This year they started manufacturing iPhone 14 in India within few weeks of launch. Previously it was after 6 months.

We (the world) will slowly but surely wean itself of China.

Usually anything tech made in India stays in India as far as manufacturing. Their government has a made in India policy.
That is false and old info buddy.

India is making huge strides in becoming phone manufacturing hub and easing earlier restrictions.

Is India any better than China? They pay their workers terrible wages and India seems more interested in partnering with Russia.

I will probably stick with buying iphones or ipads that's made in China. It will take a couple of years for me to gain appreciation and recognition of production quality in India. If it is textiles, then it is a different story.

So Foxconn in China is hiring new workers off the street after the riots and will be back to full capacity in less than a month… yet India requires “highly skilled talent” that’s not available.

Just goes to show that the story we get is gobbledygook

So you quote a Dec 5th article, things don't change overnight as far as manufacturing. During the last few years, every smartphone manufacturer was compelled to build manufacturing in India to sell there. I would be watching manufacturing increases by Foxcomm in Vietnam where products are already exported to the US.

As much as everyone can't stand the China Foxcomm production situation, India also has its issues.

India’s capital, New Delhi, was engulfed in thick smog early on Monday as cooler weather exacerbated pollution and the government banned private construction in and around the city to try to limit dust and emissions.

Residents of New Delhi and its suburbs endure poor air every winter as colder, heavier air traps construction dust, vehicle emissions and smoke from the burning of crop stubble in the nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

The air quality index in several parts of the city was between 350 and 400 on Monday, meaning it was “very poor,” according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

The central government banned all private construction in the city and surrounding areas on Sunday. Authorities also sprayed water in some neighborhoods to try to clear the air.

The government said last week it would ban diesel autorickshaws in the capital and from 2027, allowing only those three-wheeled taxis that are powered by compressed natural gas or electricity to operate.

I'm surprised they haven't diversified their manufacturing before this; for a company that sells globally to have so many products made in one place, it seemed like it wouldn't end well even before considering China's recent woes.

Why is it that Apple does not start up in Mexico, or South America?
clearly many need jobs in that area…..
