haha God knows that when I was in school there was no way I could afford a 1000$ laptop. must be nice to be rich

I hear you. I had to work all summer to buy my first desktop - a used one from Dell. It cost, about $1200, I believe.

Was fun while it lasted and it did last a few years until after I graduated and bought new XPS desktop. I'm now on what I think will be my last Dell laptop and also have a barely used desktop that about a couple years old.

Hope the new rMBP I intend to buy is as solid as all the claims I've heard.

Does this only apply to the USA?

I've checked and re-checked the cost of the Macbook Pro in Hong Kong and thus far no reduction in the Edu-rate here, its still well over US$1000.

Given I need a new Macbook Pro at the year's end, preferably with a Haswell CPU, I'm hopeful Apple will not discontinue the 13in Macbook pro and actually update it one last time before they discontinue it completely - a shame for those who require a built in Superdrive.

I want OS X and not Windows. What cheap hardware do you suggest? Can you answer that without being a jerk?

I think what hes trying to say is apple rape us mac/osx users, its not like whe have other choices (i dont think you can hackintosh a laptop) so they know whe will continue to buy and justify the prices.

Maybe, but it's long been the best selling Mac -- notebook or desktop so the specs couldn't have been that distasteful to the general consumer who it's targeted to. I owned a couple of them myself (now using a 15" RMBP), and for most tasks its a great machine and terrific for traveling..

Agree, the 13MBP is the best package for consumers, a little heavy thou.

...but if they charged you without telling you I'm willing to bet you could get that money back really easily.

But they *DO* tell you, in the terms you agree to when you purchase using the educational discount. It doesn't matter if you don't like the charge, or are mad you got caught. If you agree to something, you are bound by that agreement, unless state/country law says otherwise. Apple told you once initially, and I'm sure they's send you an email and tell you a second time before they charged your card.

What I'm saying is that if you bought something saying you were a student, payed for it, received the item, and then 2 months later or whatever they charged your card with the difference it would be pretty easy for you to get your money back.

Are you saying if they charged you when you were buying the item? If so then I agree, but you could just refuse to buy it and then try the scam again another time.

Retina on notebook or smaller screens is the new snake oil like 1080p on a 32" HDTV.
Unless your face is 1x away the diagonal screen distance, you're only imagining the higher resolution because the brightness and color saturation is cranked up.

Maybe for old people with bad eyes ;-)
